Stadia In-House Game Studios are Shutting Down

One source familiar with Stadia's first-party work told Kotaku: "Google was a bad place to make games". Google announced the Los Angeles studio last March.

Google's entry into gaming via an innovative streaming service, Google Stadia, will see all of its internal development studios shuttered. SG&E has published a few Stadia exclusives, including Orcs Must Die! In a blog post, he cited the "exponentially" rising costs involved with "creating best-in-class games from the ground up".

"Stadia will be a driving force defining the future of games and entertainment", Raymond said in March 2019.

It's been a little more than a year since Google launched its Stadia cloud gaming service, and the sky has just become a bit darker for the company's ambitious gaming initiative.

But he said Google's Stadia technology could still be a success in the long run. Stadia also saw stiff competition from Microsoft's XCloud service, which similarly streamed a wide variety of games to nearly any device provided the internet connection was strong enough.

"In 2021, we're expanding our efforts to help game developers and publishers take advantage of our platform technology and deliver games directly to their players", Harrison said. During the Xbox One generation, Microsoft also canceled several projects including Scalebound or Fable Legends, closed Fable developer Lionhead Studios, while other games like Crackdown 3 or Halo Infinite more recently seem to have gone through some very complicated development cycles. Google says that most of the teams from SG&E will be moving to new roles within the company and Jade Raymond, a gaming industry veteran brought on to lead the studios at Google, has parted ways with the company.

What did Google shut down in 2020?

"We're committed to the future of cloud gaming, and will continue to do our part to drive this industry forward", the exec said. For current Stadia and Stadia Pro consumers, it's business as usual.

"Our goal remains focused on creating the best possible platform for gamers and technology for our partners, bringing these experiences to life for people everywhere", he writes.
