Caps' Ovechkin, Orlov cleared to return from COVID list

"I thought we were the better team to be honest with you".

Turned out to be pure jubilation.

Washington Capitals defenseman Zdeno Chara (33) is mobbed by his teammates after he scored a goal during the second period of an NHL hockey game against the New York Islanders, Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021, in Washington.

Ovechkin missed the past four games due to COVID-19 protocols.

"It was enjoyable", said Ovechkin, who had an assist while being slipped back with 14 minutes of ice time. "It was kind of tough. but we battled through it and we'll take the win".

Despite their energetic start, the Bruins trailed 1-0 after Nicklas Backstrom's laser of a shot beat Tuukka Rask for the lone goal of the period.

Coach Peter Laviolette wanted to keep Ovechkin under 15 minutes because he hadn't been on the ice for so long, and he noticed the 35-year-old improve as the game went on.

The Capitals have beaten the Bruins in eight of the past nine games the two teams have played in Washington.

Of course, Ovechkin didn't do it alone.

Vitek Vanecek made 40 saves for the Capitals.

Former Bruins captain Zdeno Chara played almost 21 minutes in his first game against his former team, which did not find him as a fulltime participant at age 43. Chara, one of the few National Hockey League players who do not wear a visor, returned for the start of the second period.

Bruins forwards Jake DeBrusk (lower-body) and Ondrej Kase (upper body) are out.

The former Bruins defenseman is now in Washington D.C., where his Capitals will host the Bruins on Saturday night.

"I thought we did a lot of things well, certainly well enough to get two points", Cassidy said. "So, how I said, we take it and move forward".

David Pastrnak, who tied Ovechkin for the most goals in the league last season, made his season debut following off-season surgery to fix a torn labrum in his right hip. Rask stopped 19 of 23 shots. The Capitals (13 points) lead the East Division by two points over the Bruins.

"He's in great shape, looks good out there, but we'll have to monitor that out there".

Boston has won four straight games.

"It is a situation when rules are rules, right?"

"Obviously he's a star; he's a legend over here and the whole league", Ovechkin said.
