EA Sports to develop new college football video game after long absence

EA Sports' announcement Tuesday morning that it is resuscitating its college football video game was met with widespread glee - along with a teeny-tiny bit of resentment from those who starred in the seasons since the game stopped getting annual updates. The new EA Sports College Twitter account simply promises, "College Football is coming back". It will mark EA Sports' first college football game since the cancellation of NCAA Football in 2013.

The plan is to move forward without rosters that include the names, images or likeness of actual college players, which previously resulted in lawsuits and is the reason the NCAA did not renew its licensing contract with EA Sports after NCAA Football 14, which featured former MI quarterback Denard Robinson, was released.

However, the college game will not include student-athlete names, images and likenesses until current NCAA rules prohibiting athletes from selling their NIL rights while in college are changed. "That won't be a problem for us (in terms of making the game)". The game is in the early development stages, but Holt said that gameplay is the team's focus.

There is not a date on when the game will return, but it won't be in 2021, ESPN reported.

"We've heard from the millions of passionate fans requesting the return of college football video games", said Cam Weber, EA Sports EVP and GM.

EA Sports is coming back to college football.

The famous Ed O'Bannon suit resulted from that lack of compensation in both EA Sports' basketball and football games.

What does the game mean for NCAA football players?

"It's more around what we think we can do around the game and for our [game] players".

The company says the new franchise will deliver authentic college football experiences and the high quality gameplay. "There's a lot of things happening, and there's a lot of things happening in sports", Holt said.

"So EA Sports College Football we just felt is the right name for the product for not only now but also as we move forward".
