Covid-19: Papatoetoe family tests positive

New Zealand Prime Minsiter Jacinda Ardern on Sunday announced a three-day lockdown in the country's biggest city Auckland, after three new local COVID-19 cases were reported.

She added that the move in place was made until they discovered more about the outbreak, including finding out if the infections involved more contagious variants.

When the pandemic first struck nearly 12 months ago, New Zealand entered a strict five-week lockdown, closing all borders and shutting down all sectors. It will also force a delay in the America's Cup sailing regatta.

The remainder of the country was placed on alert level two, with people required to wear masks on public transport and gatherings limited to a maximum of 100 people.

The Auckland region under Level 3 includes the southern motorway and the north boundary south of Mangawhai Heads.

"I know we all feel the same way when this happens". "But remember, we have been here before and that means we know how to get out of this again, and that is together".

The function was attended by 38 people including a worker at the Holiday Inn quarantine hotel at Melbourne Airport, bringing the total number of cases linked to the outbreak to 16. During that time, officials will engage in a testing blitz to establish whether the virus has spread.

In the latest case, an Auckland mother, father and daughter caught the disease.

The mother works at LSG Sky Chefs, officials said, handling laundry from worldwide flights. Officials said the woman hadn't been going aboard the planes herself.

The plan for a Trans-Tasman Travel Bubble allowing quarantine-free travel between Australia and New Zealand has hit another snag with Australia declaring New Zealand a "red zone" after new community transmissions were recorded in its largest city of Auckland.

The Prime Minister said the cautious approach was the right move after three family members tested positive for Covid-19.

Serology testing has come back negative which confirms all three are active cases.

Yesterday's cases, which are a woman who works doing laundry for worldwide aircrew and her family, have been confirmed with the new, more transmissible United Kingdom variant of the virus.

"Three days will give us time to gather further information on the source and undertake further testing, as well as breaking any chains of transmission if the virus is present wider in the community", wrote the government of New Zealand.

The priority was for close contacts and casual plus contacts to be tested so we can understand any risk in the community.

Overall, New Zealand has recorded just 25 COVID-related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic out of its population of five million. Racing was due to continue on Wednesday in the Prada Cup challenger series, but organizers have announced that a postponement will be necessary. The victor will then take on Emirates Team New Zealand for the America's Cup.
