New York Legislature should probe nursing home deaths, Cuomo cover-up

New York Legislature should probe nursing home deaths, Cuomo cover-up

Then it emerged that top Cuomo aide Melissa DeRosa had told Democratic lawmakers that the tally of nursing home residents' deaths at hospitals - data that legislators had sought since August - was delayed because officials anxious that the information was "going to be used against us" by the Trump administration's Department of Justice.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) blamed the staff of NY nursing homes for the record high death toll that has dominated news headlines amid the pandemic.

"Covid did not get into the nursing homes by people coming from hospitals". But do I understand the pressure everyone was under?

Cuomo criticized a "toxic political environment" during the pandemic, accusing his critics of engaging in "political spin" to attack his administration. We told both houses, the Assembly and the Senate, that we had [a] DOJ request for information, and we were prioritizing that.

"Last week was an absolute bombshell", the New York Republican said on Fox News' "The Faulkner Focus". Covid may have been brought into a nursing home because visitors brought it in and didn't know they were contagious, because the guidance was "you can only be contagious if you have symptoms"...

The governor said that of 613 NY nursing homes, 365 received a person from a hospital.

Cuomo claimed that the New York State Department of Health "fully and publicly" and "accurately" reported "all" COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes and hospitals.

"I get these are hard decisions, but otherwise people die, and these decisions should not be politicized".

While Cuomo admitted mistakes, he did not offer an apology.

"Everyone knows Gov. Cuomo is a bully", she said.

Michael Montesano, of Glen Head, says he plans to ask the state legislature to consider the impeachment.

"These were the best professionals doing the best they could", Cuomo went on.

Cuomo said his team "made a mistake in creating the void" that "allowed press, people, cynics, politicians to fill the void".

Responding to a reporter's question later, he added: "I accept responsibility for that".

Cuomo apologized for creating "confusion and cynicism and pain for the loved ones" of those whose lives were lost to COVID-19, but he asserted that "total death counts were always accurate" and "nothing was hidden from anyone".

The Governor seems incapable of comprehending that it was his Administration at fault, and nobody else. The truth is it was in the middle of a awful pandemic.
