South Africa offers AstraZeneca jabs to AU, says Mkhize an hour ago

As many as 87,20,822 beneficiaries have been vaccinated through 1,84,303 sessions, as per the provisional report till 8 AM.

The eastern region of France announced Monday that it would receive 30,000 additional vaccine doses from the government - all of them from Pfizer-BioNTech, according to France's public broadcaster. As those first doses are part of the study, the South African tax payer won't be footing the bill.

"As more doses arrive the service will be ramped up accordingly to ensure that we maintain a good rate of daily vaccines", said Mkhize.

South Africa has one of the highest HIV burdens globally. "And I'll just reinforce that there is no evidence on whether or not the AstraZeneca product against the B1.351 variant has any change, or if that change in the vaccine efficacy is of a substantial change, and there are plausible reasons why we think that there (it) will retain activity against severe disease". India has so far reported 187 cases of the United Kingdom variant.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration is due to consider the J&J trial on February 26 and the European authority is also planning to assess it in mid-March.

The country paused the rollout of AstraZeneca doses thismonth, after preliminary trial data showed they offered minimalprotection against mild to moderate illness from the country'sdominant coronavirus variant.

The Guardian, however, reported that South Africa will not return the vaccine.

"The AU will distribute to those countries who have already expressed interest in acquiring the stock,"South African Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told lawmakers in Cape Town on Tuesday".

"We would also like to categorically refute the speculation in the media that we have returned the stock to India, we have not", he said.

The doctor says while the variant hasn't been found to make people sicker, it still needs to be taken seriously.

Quick Covid tests will be carried out door-to-door in Southampton and Bramley, near Basingstoke, after the South Africa variant of the virus was identified in positive tests. He said that the two states of Kerala and Maharashtra with 61,550 and 37,383 active cases, respectively, accounted for 72% of the total active cases in the country.

The government's main communication agency, GCIS, said thefirst delivery of vaccine would arrive at the OR TamboInternational Airport in the economic hub of Gauteng province. More vaccines are expected from Russia, Britain and India.

The nation plans to inoculate 40 million people - about 67 per cent of the population.
