Britain's Prince Philip undergoes procedure for heart condition

But he was transferred to St Bartholomew's in the City of London on Monday for treatment for a pre-existing heart condition.

He has now returned to King Edward VII's hospital in central London to continue his recovery.

The duke is due to celebrate his 100th birthday in June.

In a statement obtained by Insider on Monday, it was confirmed that Philip was taken by ambulance to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, where he was expected to remain until the end of the week.

Barts is an NHS hospital and home to Europe's largest specialised cardiovascular unit.

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth's husband, was admitted to the King Edward VII's hospital mid-February as a "precautionary measure" after he complained of feeling unwell.

During a visit to a vaccination centre in England on Wednesday, Camilla said her father-in-law is "slightly improving" and that the entire royal family are trying to stay positive.

While Prince Philip has had a number of health battles in recent years, this current stint has become his longest hospital stay ever.

Since being admitted to hospital, the duke has been publicly visited only by his son and heir Prince Charles.

The duke and the Queen have been staying at Windsor Palace, just outside of London, during the pandemic, and both received their first COVID-19 vaccinations in early January.

Although he enjoyed good health well into old age, Philip has had heart issues in the past.

Giving a brief update on his condition on 23 February, he told Sky News: "As far as I'm aware, well I did speak to him the other day, so he's a lot better thank you very much indeed, and he's looking forward to getting out, which is the most positive thing".

At Christmas in 2011 he had an operation to clear a blocked artery in his heart after being rushed to hospital with chest pains.

Camilla added on Wednesday: "We will keep our fingers crossed". Buckingham Palace said: "Following The Duke of Edinburgh's successful procedure at St Bartholomew's Hospital on Wednesday, His Royal Highness has been transferred to King Edward VII's Hospital this morning".
