Chuck Schumer joins Democrats calling for Cuomo to resign

In a joint statement, Congressman Jamaal Bowman and Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez said lawmakers "believe these women" and reporting that has "concluded that Governor Cuomo can no longer effectively lead in the face of so many challenges".

"Confronting and overcoming the Covid crisis requires sure and steady leadership", the two senators said.

A formal investigation was greenlighted this week to probe the claims, which now come from six women who say Cuomo sexually harassed or inappropriately touched them.

'I join with Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins, my colleagues, and others who have called on Governor Cuomo to resign in the best interest of all New Yorkers.

"I did not do what has been alleged", the 63-year-old three-term governor said.

But a majority of state lawmakers are calling on him to resign, and Democratic congressional members including U.S. Reps.

Psaki reiterated that President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris support the state attorney general's investigation into the harassment allegations.

Mr Heastie, who said he made a decision to launch the probe after meeting with fellow Democrats who control the Assembly, said last weekend that Mr Cuomo should "seriously consider whether he can effectively meet the needs of the people of NY".

The firestorm around the governor grew after the Times Union of Albany reported Wednesday that an unidentified aide told a supervisor Cuomo reached under her shirt and fondled her at his official residence late previous year.

The top Democrat in the state Assembly, Speaker Carl Heastie, on Thursday backed a plan for its judiciary committee to launch an impeachment investigation.

Cuomo's growing list of detractors now covers virtually every region in the state and the political power centers of New York City and Washington.

"The repeated accusations against the governor, and the manner in which he has responded to them, have made it impossible for him to continue to govern at this point", Nadler said.

After a politically tumultuous week in his career, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was photographed Friday evening speaking on the phone and walking the grounds of the governor's mansion.

Charlotte Bennett, a former health policy adviser for Cuomo, said in the spring of 2020, the governor asked her about her sex life and whether she would be interested in a sexual or romantic relationship with an older man.

Cuomo has repeatedly said he will not step down.

Shortly after the representatives issued their statements on Friday, State Senator Mike Gianaris revealed that the entire Democratic state senate delegation had also now agreed that Cuomo should resign.

"Politicians who don't know a single fact but yet form a conclusion and an opinion are, in my opinion, reckless and unsafe", he added.

It alleged that Mr Cuomo put his hand under the blouse of a female staffer and touched her "aggressively" at the end of past year in his private residence.

"These allegations have all been consistent and highly detailed, and there are also credible media reports substantiating their accounts", Mr Bowman and Ms Ocasio-Cortez and said their statement.

A growing number of women have accused the governor of inappropriate behavior.

The panel's investigation, which will run parallel to one being led by New York Attorney-General Letitia James, will be authorised to interview witnesses, subpoena documents and evaluate evidence.

"The victims of sexual assault concern me more than politics or other narrow considerations, and I believe Governor Cuomo must step aside", Maloney said.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has frequently clashed with Cuomo, has also called on him to step down.
