Gaetz: 'Sexual Conduct' Probe Is Based on False Allegations

Gaetz: 'Sexual Conduct' Probe Is Based on False Allegations

Fox News' Tucker Carlson was stunned by Rep Matt Gaetz's appearance on his show Tuesday night, calling it one of the "weirdest interviews" ever.

Rep. Matt Gaetz has confirmed that he is under federal investigation for "sexual conduct with women"-but he says the allegations "are as searing as they are false".

The Times reports that the probe first began in the waning days of the Trump administration, and that the investigation is part of a broader look into an ally of Gaetz's named Joel Greenberg, a former Florida county official who was indicted on charges including sex trafficking of a child.

At the time, Gaetz denied to the Tampa Bay Times that he created, had knowledge of, or participated in the game.

Gaetz said in a tweet that he has been "cooperating with federal authorities". The person could not publicly discuss the details of an ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

In an interview with Axios, he added that the specifics of the allegations are "unclear" and he's been told "very little" about the investigation and that his lawyers were informed he was "not a target but a subject of an investigation regarding sexual conduct with women".

Fox News host Dana Perino on Wednesday put House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on the hot seat over revelations that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is being probed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for potential sex trafficking charges.

Gaetz alleges the investigation is connected to an attempt to extort him and his family by a former DOJ official. "The planted leak to the FBI tonight was meant to thwart that investigation", he continued.

"No part of the allegations against me are true and the people pushing these lies are targets of the ongoing extortion investigation", he wrote.

The investigation of Gaetz, the three people told the newspaper, is part of a larger probe of former Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg who was indicted a year ago on a series of sex trafficking charges.

A judge ordered the former tax collector back to jail earlier this month for violating the conditions of his release.

Two of the people told the newspaper the encounters investigators are looking at took place two years ago. "I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward", Gaetz said in a statement. "Providing for flights and hotel rooms for people that you're dating who are of legal age is not a crime".

"I know that there was a demand for money in exchange for a commitment that he could make this investigation go away along with his co-conspirators".

"Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name".
