Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz claims sex trafficking investigation is extortion attempt

The Justice Department is investigating whether Rep. Matt Gaetz, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, had a possible sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and paid for her to travel with him. During the interview Gaetz denied all of the allegations against him. He also told Carlson that his father "is wearing a wire", and most freaky of all, he proceeded to bring up Carlson in the matter.

He denied that he ever had a relationship with any underage girls and said the allegations against him were "as searing as they are false". "But I do agree with you that being accused falsely is one of the worst things that can happen and you do see it a lot". Which, as you saw, he did. "I don't think that clarified much, but it certainly showed this is a deeply interesting story".

Rep. Matt Gaetz said a DOJ investigation into whether he broke sex-trafficking laws is based on "lies" and "false" allegations.

The probe has been underway for almost a year and Gaetz, who represents parts of western Florida, has been aware for months that he was under investigation, the person familiar with the matter told the Associated Press. He followed up by pressing Gaetz on the identity of the 17-year-old girl he allegedly had a relationship with, but the Florida Republican claimed the "person doesn't exist".

In an interview with Axios, he added that the specifics of the allegations are "unclear" and he's been told "very little" about the investigation and that his lawyers were informed he was "not a target but a subject of an investigation regarding sexual conduct with women".

On Tuesday evening, the lawmaker appeared on "Tucker Carlson Tonight", slamming the Times report as an attempt to thwart a separate investigation into his extortion claims.

As one DOJ veteran told Insider, the timeline doesn't necessarily mean Gaetz's claims of an extortion scheme are untrue, but it does indicate the department's probe was not launched as a result of any such scheme. That ex-official has sought $25 million, Gaetz says.

"Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name".

Gaetz also took to social media, tweeting out a story about how his father wore a wire, as part of an FBI investigation, to catch those responsible for the scheme.

"The Justice Department regularly prosecutes such cases, and offenders often receive severe sentences", writes the Times.

"No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets. of the ongoing extortion investigation", he continued.

'I believe that there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to criminalize my sexual conduct, you know, when I was a single guy, ' Gaetz told Axios.

"You just referred to a mentally ill viewer who accused me of a sex crime 20 years ago and, of course, it was not true", said Carlson.

"I only know what I've read about in the New York Times", he claims, before putting Carlson into the dragnet.

"I don't think it's a coincidence that tonight, somehow the New York Times is leaking this information, smearing me and ruining the investigation that would likely result in one of the former colleagues of the current DOJ being brought to justice for trying to extort me and my family", Gaetz said.

"In exchange for the funds being arranged, and upon the release of Mr. Levinson, the team that delivers Mr. Levinson to the President of The United States shall strongly advocate that President Biden issue a Presidential Pardon, or instruct the Department of Justice to terminate any and all investigations involving Congressman Gaetz", said the document Kent reportedly gave Gaetz's father, which bore the heading "Project Homecoming". He reiterated to The Washington Post that he was not connected with any extortion attempt against Gaetz or with a Justice Department investigation of him.
