Covid-19: Seven UK blood clot deaths after AstraZeneca vaccine

An Australian man has been admitted to hospital with a rare blood clotting disorder a few days after receiving the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

AstraZeneca Plc said the review of safety data of people vaccinated with its Covid-19 vaccine has shown no evidence of an increased risk of blood clots.

The Netherlands is again suspending use of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine following reports of serious thrombosis-related side effects, the health ministry said on Friday.

Although more research is needed to examine possible links, "the key thing to remember is how rare these brain clots are, and how powerful the proven benefit of vaccination is against Covid", said David Werring, professor of clinical neurology at University College London's Institute of Neurology.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) COVID-19 Working Group are meeting on Friday evening to discuss further advice on the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Australia's Deputy Chief Medical Officer says it is "likely" there is a link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and a Melbourne man being hospitalised with blood clots. The vaccine received conditional approval on March 2.

It has had troubles rolling out its vaccination program, however, missing a March target by about 3.3 million doses as states and the federal government bickered over the blame.

"Before we start linking the dots, we just need to put this into perspective that this is a very rare event and it's likely not to do with AstraZeneca", she said.

German regulators said they had received 31 reports of rare blood clots in the head in recipients of the AstraZeneca vaccine and nine deaths up to March 29, roughly doubling the number that had been reported in the country by March 22.

Lareb said the events had occurred 7 to 10 days after vaccination.

On March 18, the United Kingdom medicines regulator said that there had been five cases of a rare brain blood clot among 11 million administered shots.

There were previously fears that Malaysia would discontinue its AstraZeneca programme following reports the vaccine caused blood clots.

"That's still up in the air", said Fauci when asked whether the US will use the AstraZeneca vaccine doses.
