People fully vaccinated for coronavirus can travel safely again, CDC says

U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow expressed confidence that there would be a return to domestic leisure travel this year, but said more needs to be done.

Officials consider people fully vaccinated two weeks after they receive the last dose of their vaccine.

"Every day you get more data, and you change your guidance", said Dr. Ali Khan, dean of the University of Nebraska's College of Public Health.

Within the United States, vaccinated people will not have to quarantine or take a Covid-19 test after traveling, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The U.S. will still require airline passengers coming into the country to get a test within three days of their departure and show proof of a negative test before boarding. The CDC also stressed that the latest announcement applied only to those who are fully vaccinated, and called on the unvaccinated to continue to avoid travel.

The fully vaccinated people are about 17.5 per cent of the whole population.

Worldwide travelers are still required to show a negative COVID-19 test to board a flight heading to the United States, and are recommended to get another test three to five days after returning. But they do not need to quarantine when they arrive here.

Plans to visit family, relax, and escape to the beach were already in the works as the CDC announced new travel guidelines for the fully vaccinated. The agency noted the potential introduction of virus variants and differences in vaccine coverage around the world for the cautious guidance on overseas travel. The Transportation Security Administration reported more than 1.5 million travelers going through airports on Thursday, an increase of 400 percent since its lowest point in the pandemic in April, according to the TSA.

Masks are still recommended, along with social distancing and other precautions. Vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna require two doses given a few weeks apart.
