Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine shows strong effectiveness after six months

Out of 800 trial participants in South Africa, only nine got sick which included six with the B.1351 variant.

Fully vaccinated people are free to travel domestically and overseas with little precautions except wearing a mask in public, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday.

The workers also underwent antibody tests to gauge the response of their immune systems to the vaccinations.

On Wednesday, the companies said a small trial of volunteers aged 12 to 15 showed 100% efficacy in that age group.

"These data confirm the favorable efficacy and safety profile of our vaccine and position us to submit a Biologics License Application to the U.S. FDA", Albert Bourla, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer said in a statement.

The study found cellular T cell responses developed in 63% of the older people given two doses of the Pfizer jab.

The COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and partnering biotechnology company BioNTech has proven "highly effective" against the coronavirus - including variants - for at least six months after full inoculation.

Although the new study did not look at the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine, Prof Moss said the evidence for the jab is that "it's very, very effective".

'From the 927 confirmed symptomatic cases of COVID-19 in the trial, 850 cases of COVID-19 were in the placebo group and 77 cases were in the BNT162b2 group, corresponding to vaccine efficacy of 91.3%,' it said.

But global travelers headed to the United States should have a negative Covid-19 test before they get on the plane, be tested after arrival, and must quarantine if local authorities in the United States require it, the CDC said in a statement.

It comes as a separate UK-based study found the Pfizer vaccine produces an "off the scale" immune response that is likely to protect against the Brazilian variant of Covid-19, with scientists in the United Kingdom reporting strong immune responses in older people who had received two shots of the Pfizer vaccine.

'The vaccine elicits such high levels of antibodies that even when confronted with a variant. there's still meaningful protection, ' Hensley told CNN.
