India recorded the highest single-day rise in coronavirus cases in six months with 88,665 new infections in a span of 24 hours, taking the COVID-19 tally of cases to 1,23,90,775, according to State Health Departments and Ministries on Friday.

Out of which 33,65,597 beneficiaries were vaccinated for the first dose and 3,05,645 beneficiaries received the second dose.

"There has been 24% increase in HCW database in the past few days". The first category of priority group included healthcare workers and frontline workers as decided with a goal to protect them.

"Various inputs have been received from different sources that in some of the CVCs (Covid vaccination centres), some ineligible beneficiaries are being registered as HCWs and FLWs and are getting vaccinated in complete violation of the prescribed guidelines".

The US top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci on Saturday (local time) warned that the United States may be on the cusp of another COVID-19 surge if Americans aren't careful.

It may be recalled that the countrywide vaccination drive was launched on January 16 and the vaccination of frontline workers started from February 2. In the latest phase, everyone over 45 years of age can be vaccinated. Later, persons aged 60 years and above and those aged 45-59 years with identified 20 co-morbidities were covered from March 1 2021.

According to a provisional report issued by the ministry, a total of 12,76,191 vaccine doses were given till 8 pm today, which mark the 77th day of nationwide COVID-19 vaccination.

India on Friday recorded 81,466 new coronavirus cases, pushing the overall count in the country to 1,23,03,131, data from the Union health ministry showed.

The death toll rose to 1,64,623 with 513 fresh fatalities.

Another 21,000 infections were reported in the country on Saturday in Italy, along with 376 new deaths.
