'What concerns Prince Hamzah should be resolved within the royal family': Majali

Hamzah said he had been informed he was being punished for taking in part in meetings in which the king had been criticized, though he said he was not accused of joining in the criticism.

He told a news conference that the prince had been liaising with foreign parties about destabilising the country and had been being monitored for some time.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called the monarch to affirm Cairo's "full solidarity" with Jordan and express "complete support of the recent decisions (he) has taken to ensure the stability and security of the kingdom", according to a presidency statement.

Labib Kamhawi, a Jordanian analyst, told the Associated Press that Hamzah likely crossed a line for the royal family by indicating he might be an alternative to the long-ruling king.

"Some members of the royal family have been trying to instrumentalise Jordan's economic and governance problems to present themselves as reformists who possess the solution to Jordan's challenges", said Ms Khatib.

The oldest son of the late King Hussein and his favourite wife Queen Noor, Prince Hamzah is a graduate of the UK's Harrow School and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.

Mr Safadi said that a "foreign intelligence agency" had been in contact with Prince Hamza's wife to supply them with a plane out of the country.

Jordanian state media confirmed that a number of officials were detained for security reasons, but denied reports that Prince Hamzah was among them.

He denied being part of "any conspiracy or nefarious organisation", but said the Hashemite kingdom had "become stymied in corruption, in nepotism, and in misrule" where no-one was allowed to criticise the authorities.

"Jordan is a great friend of Pakistan, peace, security and stability of Jordan is very dear to Pakistan", said Ashrafi, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council.

He has also served as an adviser to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

Awadallah, a US-educated former finance and planning minister, was close to the king but has also been a controversial figure in Jordan. Jordan made peace with Israel in 1994.

Kuwait's foreign ministry expressed its support to all measures taken by King Abdullah and his crown prince to maintain the security and stability of Jordan, adding "the security and stability of the kingdom are that of Kuwait".

In early 2018, as then-President Donald Trump was threatening to cut aid to countries that did not support USA policies, the administration boosted assistance to Jordan by more than $1 billion over five years.

Abdullah had appointed Hamzah crown prince in 1999 in line with Hussein's dying wish, but in 2004 stripped him of the title and gave it to his own eldest son Hussein. The move was seen at the time as part of Abdullah's consolidation of power five years after the succession.
