Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed: ‘We reject all that is destabilising Jordan’

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed: ‘We reject all that is destabilising Jordan’

"We confirm here that there is now full control over these movements ... and the state services were able to smother them before they began", Safadi said.

Bessma Momani, a professor of worldwide relations at Ontario's Waterloo University, said the house arrest of Hamzah was "self-defeating" because it is likely to strengthen the prince's popularity.

He accused the prince of seeking to mobilise "clan leaders" against the government, adding that the plot had been "nipped in the bud" at the "zero hour".

King Abdullah II will discuss the situation with Hamzah, his half-brother, directly and within the royal family, Safadi said in a press conference.

On Saturday the military said it had issued a warning to the prince over actions targeting "security and stability" in the key US ally.

Safadi declined on Sunday to identify the foreign parties he said were involved, but declared that their "sinful plans" were aimed to "weaken Jordan's position regarding primary issues in the region".

What was the reaction in Jordan?

Videos posted online showed a heavy police deployment in the Dabouq area near the royal palaces on the edge of Amman, while former crown prince Hamzah bin Hussein said he was confined to his home.

"Praying that truth and justice will prevail for all the innocent victims of this wicked slander", former Queen Noor wrote on Twitter. But the prince has disputed this in a video message.

His comment came during a meeting of top officials as they mark the 100th anniversary of the Jordanian state.

Maintaining the security and stability of Jordan is an essential pillar of Arab security, Wam quoted him as saying.

Some 14 to 16 people were arrested, Mr Safadi said, as well as two other senior officials whose detentions had been previously confirmed.

Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, a member of the royal family, and Bassem Awadallah, who was director of King Abdullah's office in 2006, were also arrested following "comprehensive investigations undertaken by security agencies".

He was named crown prince of Jordan in 1999 and was a favourite of King Hussein, who often described him in public as the "delight of my eye".

Awadallah, a proponent of economic reforms, resigned as chief of the royal court in 2008 amid allegations of interference in sensitive political and economic issues.

Safadi accused Awadallah, now a prominent businessman in the Gulf, of handling the contacts with foreigners.

Prince Faisal also reiterated the Saudi stance that a normalisation of ties with Israel would only be possible after a peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians.

Neighbouring Saudi Arabia reacted swiftly to developments in Amman. The individual said the recording is a few days old and was made after the army chief threatened the prince.

An Israeli man based in Europe contacted Jordan's Prince Hamzah bin Hussein over the weekend and offered to organize his family's evacuation from Jordan on a private jet, according to a report on Sunday. "This is why we are now witnessing what has happened".

Jordan received support from several countries, including Morocco.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman both phoned Jordan's king to express their support, Saudi state media said.

Public anger has also increased since nine COVID-19 patients died when oxygen ran out in a newly built state hospital, exposing negligence blamed on official mismanagement and corruption. He has good relations officially with Abdullah, his half-brother, and is a popular figure close to tribal leaders. "I am a close personal friend of Prince Hamzah", he told Walla.

In light of the developments over the past two days, I put myself at the disposal of His Majesty the King, and I reaffirm that I will always remain committed to the covenant of the ancestors, loyal to their legacy, following in their footsteps, devoted to their path and mission, and to His Majesty the King; and committed to the Constitution of the dear Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
