Suspect dead, 2 critically injured in Maryland shooting

Two people are in critical condition after a shooting on Tuesday near a United States military base in Frederick, Maryland.

Officials responded about 8:20 the initial shooting scene at Riverside Technical Park in Frederick, about 52 miles northwest of Washington, police said Tuesday.

The two people who were shot had "life-threatening" injuries, Allen Etzler, spokesman for the Police Department, said, as quoted by the New York Times.

When Woldesenbet arrived at a Fort Detrick checkpoint he initially stopped and Army officials attempted to confirm his identity.

The suspect traveled about a half-mile down the road toward the base before he was shot and killed by Army officials. Frederick Mayor Michael O'Connor noted that various defense contractors are located near Fort Detrick and that it wouldn't be unusual for a member of the military to be off base and working with a private firm that does business with the US government. Fort Detrick's public affairs office didn't immediately respond to calls and an email seeking comment. Police did not identify the people involved because of the ongoing investigation, but the Navy announced Monday morning that the shooter was a Hospital Corpsman.

By early afternoon, the Nallin Farm gate at Fort Detrick through which the shooter entered remained closed and two officers were standing by.

He said the base had been training for an active-shooter scenario similar to this and expected to conduct a full rehearsal in about a week.

Police say there is no longer any threat to the community.

Fort Detrick is home to the military's flagship biological defense laboratory and several federal civilian biodefense labs. "And today it did".

Lando called the shootings "very tragic".
