Russia Continues Massing Military Hardware on Ukrainian Border

Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday called on the parties to the conflict in southeastern Ukraine to exercise restraint, the Kremlin said. "Everything depends on how major the fire is", Kozak said.

The Kremlin on Wednesday criticized Ukraine's appeal to join North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and said Russian Federation will keep as many forces on the Ukrainian border as it sees fit.

On Thursday, Dmitry Kozak, a senior Kremlin official, said Ukraine's government were like "children playing with matches".

THE Communist Party of Ukraine (KPU) has accused the United States of stoking tensions on the country's border with Russian Federation.

Psaki said that the United States "is increasingly concerned by recent escalating Russian aggressions in eastern Ukraine, including Russian troop movements on Ukraine's border".

Russian Federation has been increasing the number of troops at the Ukrainian border, but at the same time maintains that they should not be seen as a threat.

For their part, the rebels said one of their fighters was killed on the same day when Ukrainian troops fired 14 mortar bombs at a village on the outskirts of the city of Donetsk.

What else did the Kremlin official say?

"If they try to do it like in Srebrenica, as our president said, we will likely have to come to their defense", he said in a reference to the July 1995 massacre of civilians in Srebrenica by Bosnian Serb forces during the Bosnian war.

A spokesman for US President Biden said that the Ukrainians have long wanted to join North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and that the US government is also talking to them about this. He is the deputy head of Russia's presidential administration.

A meeting of a trilateral working group on Ukraine's rebel-held Donbass region ended on Wednesday without any tangible results, said Russia's envoy to the group, Boris Gryzlov.

But there have been no reports of any such atrocity being planned.

What's the background to all this?

Putin has made previous analogies to a "second Srebrenica" if Ukraine does not submit to an amnesty on new border lines which have emerged since the conflict started in 2014.

The Moscow Times gave Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky credit for a "sincere promise to bring peace to Ukraine" when he was elected in 2019, but argued he could not make all of the concessions to Russian Federation envisioned by the Minks accords without getting booted out of office by "the Ukrainian nationalist opposition".

Kiev's Western allies have repeatedly warned Russian Federation against taking further action and seeking explanations for its troop build-up on Ukraine's border. Minsk was the venue for negotiations in 2014 and 2015 that produced a peace plan for Donbass, a set of accords Kyiv and the separatists perpetually accuse each other of violating.
