He said Broderick knew the victims but didn't elaborate on how or provide a motive for the shootings.

Austin's KXAN, citing an arrest affidavit, reported last June that the Travis County Sheriff's Office detective was on administrative leave following an arrest for allegations of sexual assault.

"We do not think that this individual is out targeting random people to shoot them", Chacon added, warning, nonetheless that "He is still at large, we do think that he is armed and he is very much risky".

At a news conference later in the afternoon, Joseph Chacon, the interim police chief of the Austin Police, told reporters that the alleged suspect, Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41, was still on the loose and was considered "armed and unsafe".

Austin Police said around 1:30PM that the suspect remains at large. Authorities are not calling this an active shooter situation. "He's wearing a gray hoodie, sunglasses, and a baseball cap". No further information was immediately provided about Broderick, including his tenure as a deputy. The three victims have since been identified as a Black man and two Hispanic women.

"I'm a little anxious just because, you know, we know a lot of our neighbors and our dogs were here and everything but. As my light turns green and I'm driving, I see cop auto after cop vehicle after cop auto rushing toward where I just was".

Austin police, SWAT and medical personnel respond to an active shooter situation located Great Hills Trail in Northwest Austin, Texas, on Sunday, April 18, 2021. Later Sunday, law enforcement began leaving the area.

Police said a portion of a nearby highway would be shut down in both directions.
