Former deputy arrested near Austin in connection with 3 fatal shootings

Police said the shooting was reported around noon at an apartment complex near the Great Hills Plaza and The Arboretum shopping area in northwestern Austin.

Police are hunting the gunman who killed three people Sunday afternoon in Austin, capital of US state of Texas. It added, "While a suspect is still at large it appears this is a domestic situation that is isolated and there is no risk to the general public".

It is unknown if Broderick fled on foot or in a vehicle, and authorities are concerned that he could be hiding or take a hostage, according to Austin Police Interim Chief Joseph Chacon.

The three people killed were pronounced dead at the scene.

Stephen Broderick, 41, was arrested Monday morning around 7:30 Manor, Texas, a suburb just east of Austin, KXAN reported. Her mom Amanda Broderick was also said to be shot to death.

"This is still an ongoing and active investigation and we do not have this individual in custody yet", Int.

Chacon said the danger remains high and authorities asked area residents to shelter in place as authorities search for the suspect.

According to reports, police say Broderick is a former deputy with the Tavis Country Sheriff's Office in Austin and knew the three victims.

Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza said in a statement that Broderick had been arrested for sexual assault of a child last June and was released on $50,000 bond. He said Broderick knew the victims but didn't elaborate on how or provide a motive for the shootings.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Kristen Dark tells the Austin American-Statesman that Broderick, a property crimes detective, resigned after the arrest. Chacon also said a child was involved but that the child has been located and is safe.
