Ontario tightens restrictions, gives police new powers amid dire COVID predictions

The province says two of the most recent deaths occurred in the past 24 hours, while the other seven took place between April 11 and 16.

On Friday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced his province would be setting up checkpoints at all of Ontario's interprovincial borders.

The province said 203 people were hospitalized with the virus, including 41 in intensive care.

Effective Saturday, April 17 at 12:01 a.m., police officers and other provincial offences officers will have the authority to require any individual to provide their home address and goal for not being at their residence.

Ford also said enforcement will be ramped up, "We are taking decisive action on the ground to dramatically step up enforcement". The new authority, she said, will last for the duration of the stay-at-home order.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 412,745 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 364,353 recoveries and 7,698 deaths, of which 3,912 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

New modelling released today suggests the Province could see up to 18,000 daily cases of COVID-19 by the end of May if current trends continue.

Starting on Monday, Ontario is tightening restrictions further.

"That is a difference that needs to be closed", Brown said, nothing that the province would see "a very, very big return" in the number of cases prevented if shots are allocated to high-risk communities.

The province's total COVID-19 case count now stands at 416,995 since the pandemic began, with 367,691 people having now recovered from the virus.

The Ford government implemented a stay-at-home order last week after health experts urged and called for the closure of non-essential businesses and services. "The reality is there are few options left".

"These are tough, but necessary measures to help us overcome this health crisis", Jones said. "We've implemented the strictest measures in all of North America, and the hard truth is every public health measure we have left has a massive cost to people and their lives".

"In order to maintain public trust and support our members in their work, it is important we get this right".

Later Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada has purchased an additional eight million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine that will be delivered in May, June and July, said Friday.

"I've never shied away from telling you the brutal, honest truth", Ford said.

Eastern Ontario reported 52 new cases Sunday, while the Kingston health unit had 11 new cases, Leeds Grenville had 10, and Renfrew County reported three.

" Low-income racialized people (many are essential workers) have a history of being over-policed".

The province's positivity rate is now 6.9 per cent, compared to 8.2 per cent on Friday, according to the Ministry of Health.

It's unclear what impact this might have on the London region, which is already expecting a reduction in COVID-19 vaccines in coming weeks.

The previously announced hospitalization has now been moved into intensive care at the QEH.
