India records world's biggest single-day rise in coronavirus cases

India records world's biggest single-day rise in coronavirus cases

That's enough to cover about 4.8% of its vast 1.3 billion population, according to Bloomberg's vaccine tracker.

Total coronavirus cases in India are now at 15.32 million, second only to the United States, with epidemiologists saying many more infectious new variants of the virus were one of the main factors behind the latest surge in cases.

A large number of hospitals are reporting acute shortages of beds and medicine and have dangerously low levels of oxygen.

The court then adjourned the case for Thursday after the Centre informed the bench that it had allocated 480 metric tonnes of oxygen to Delhi, and some of the Max hospitals had reported receiving new stocks.

The Centre, last Friday, had directed states to ensure uninterrupted movement of medical oxygen carrying vehicles along their borders and said that they must not impose any curb on production and supply of the essential public health commodity anywhere.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India faced a coronavirus "storm" overwhelming its health system and the government was working with state governments and private companies to deliver oxygen with "speed and sensitivity".

New South Wales and Western Australia state officials said genetic sequencing found links to the same sequence of virus in infected guests resident in Sydney and Perth hotels during routine tests.

India's capital of New Delhi is now in a week-long lockdown to help curb surging infection numbers.

In scenes familiar across the country, ambulances are seen rushing from one hospital to another, trying to find an empty bed. Grieving relatives are lining up outside crematoriums where the arrival of dead bodies has jumped several times.

"Local oxygen suppliers were contacted and 11 oxygen cylinders were arranged for the hospital from Kirti Nagar, Gole Market and Mayapuri", Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Prashant Gautam said. In the last week, three patients of mine have died at home because they were unable to get beds. "As a doctor, it's an bad feeling", Gururaj said. Vij also said given the increased demand for oxygen due to a surge in coronavirus cases, Haryana can spare the supply for others only after the state meets its own demand.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh asked defence public sector undertakings, DRDO and Ordnance Factory Board to work on a war footing to provide oxygen cylinders and extra beds to state governments at the earliest to help them in dealing with the surging cases of COVID 19.

The main cremation ground at Lucknow, the state capital, received almost 200 bodies on Sunday. This was followed by Delhi, which lost 249 people, and Uttar Pradesh from where 187 new fatalities were recorded. So far, a total of 27,27,05,103 samples have been tested in the country.

The previous record one-day rise in cases was held by the United States, which had 297,430 new cases on one day in January, though its tally has since fallen sharply.
