Americans Can Travel to Europe This Summer - If Vaccinated, Says EU Head

It is clear that the Member States will allow entry to those vaccinated with vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency, von der Leyen added.

The Times said the US's rapid vaccination programme, and progress in talks over how to use vaccine certificates, were behind the plan to allow the return of leisure travel from the United States to EU.

European Commissioner Ms von der Leyen confirmed the news in an interview with the New York Times (NYT) this weekend.

Dr Kalaiarasu M Periasamy said based on data from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), there have been 168 cases of thrombosis detected worldwide since March and, during that period, about 21.6 million individuals worldwide had received the AstraZeneca vaccine jab.

Travel restrictions keep evolving for those who have gotten the COVID-19 vaccine shots.

White House senior Covid-19 adviser Andy Slavitt said von der Leyen's comments are affirmation of the United States vaccination program. "This will enable free movement and travel to the European Union".

Von der Leyen said that the United States was making "huge progress" and noted it was on track to vaccinate 70% of adults by the middle of June.

The EU has now started the process of checking its own citizens with "digital green certificates". Thus, the resumption of tourism in Europe would bring a much-needed financial boost for countries, the GDP of which is largely supported by the travel and tourism sector.

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Americans who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can resume travel at low risk to themselves, the agency is still not recommending travel given rising COVID case counts.

The report says this could include travellers to the European Union receiving an European Union vaccine-certificate equivalent on arrival after showing a bona fide certificate issued by his or her own government that they have been vaccinated.

"There's a bit of distance to go yet in terms of even the discussion at European Council on this", he said.

In addition to EU Chief and Germany, several other countries have also hinted at helping India out of the crisis - namely Australia, Russia, US, UK, Pakistan, Singapore, France among others.
