Cars could be seen trapped underneath.

The Mexico City subway has 12 lines and carries millions of passengers each day.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said 70 people were injured, with 34 hospitalised, and people could still trapped inside the train, which was split in two and appeared partially suspended.

"There were many people standing and sitting in the carriage", she said, adding that she hit the carriage's roof.

Because the partially dangling train was "very weak", rescue efforts were briefly paused at midnight and a crane had to be brought in. We will focus on reports from police officials and other authorities, credible news outlets and reporters who are at the scene, and we will update as the situation develops.

Local channel Milenio TV posted video showing the overpass collapsing on top of cars on a road five meters below.

"We lost contact with her, at 10:50 p.m., there was literally no more contact", López said.

The derailment occurred on Line 12 of the subway system at Olivos Station, according to Mexico's civil protection agency.

Emergency medical crews and firefighters combed through the wreckage looking for survivors after the incident on Monday night at the overpass of the metro's 12 line. It is the newest of the capital's 12 metro lines, opening for the first time in 2012. Allegations about poor design and construction on the subway line emerged soon after Ebrard left office as mayor.

"What happened today with the Metro is a bad tragedy. My solidarity with the victims and their families", he said on Twitter.

A collision in Tacubaya station previous year left one person dead and 41 injured while another collision in 2015 at the Oceania station injured 12 people.

"Of course the causes should be investigated and those responsible should be identified", he wrote.

The Mexico City Metro, one of the largest and busiest in the world, has had at least two serious accidents since its inauguration half a century ago. "I repeat that I am entirely at the disposition of authorities to contribute in whatever way is necessary".
