San Jose railyard shooting: Multiple fatalities reported, shooter dead

In a news conference, police officials said the scene is still being investigated and more details will be released soon.

A gunman opened fire at a public transit rail yardin San Jose, California, Wednesday morning, causing multiple casualties and fatalities, Deputy Russell Davis of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said.

The Mercury News also confirmed that multiple people are dead, including the shooter. One of the outlets, KRON, reported that the suspect fired shots at a light-rail train at the facility, which is near Interstate 880.

Authorities urged the public to stay away from the area while nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution. Liccardo further added that a reunification center has been established for families at the County Building at 70 Hedding St., near 1st street.

Less than an hour later, the sheriff's office reported the alleged shooter was down.


The building where the incident took place is a control center for the area's Valley Transportation Authority that is also used to store trains and serves as a maintenance yard.

First reports of gunfire came at around 6:30am local time.

It was not immediately clear if the shooter was a worker at the facility, but police said some of the victims were employees at the site. "I could not be more proud of the VTA organization". ".we are in a very dark moment, but I am heartened to see the response of the VTA family".

"I can't confirm the exact number of injuries and fatalities", he said.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office tweeted: 'Deputies now on scene for an active shooter investigation in the area of 100 W. Younger Ave. SJ.
