Eight killed in San Jose shooting

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office confirmed that nine people, including the gunman, died at the scene and one person was taken to a hospital, with no details on their conditions.

Authorities have yet to establish a motive for the shooting. Two law enforcement officials identified the suspect as 57-year-old Sam Cassidy.

The other victims of the shooting were identified as Paul Delacruz Megia (42), Adrian Balleza (29), Jose Dejesus Hernandez (35), Timothy Michael Romo (49), Michael Joseph Rudometkin (40), Abdolvahab Alaghmandan (63), and Lars Kepler Lane (63).

The woman said, "I was lucky he didn't kill me", explaining that they had "issues", and when he proposed to her, she turned him down.

Cassidy had worked at the light rail yard for at least eight years, according to public records.

The shooting took place in two buildings and killed employees who had been bus and light rail operators, mechanics, linemen and an assistant superintendent over the course of their careers.

His ex-wife filed a restraining order against him in 2009, according to court records.

Further investigation revealed that the situation happened not in the operations and control centre, but in a part of the yard where workers do maintenance on vehicles. Rail service on the commuter line was suspended after the shooting. Neighborhood security footage showed him leaving the intact home around 5:45 a.m. and never returning prior to the blaze, the San Jose Mercury News reported. It is considered the heart of Silicon Valley, a global center of technological innovation where some of America's biggest tech companies are based. I will update as more information becomes available.

A California woman who divorced the now-deceased suspect in 2004 told the San Francisco Chronicle that Cassidy historically complained about other individuals receiving easier assignments at work, including those at the site of the mass shooting.

Special agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were responding to the crime scene, officials said.

In a statement from the White House, U.S.President Joe Biden said he and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed on the shootings.

The attack was the latest of at least nine deadly US mass shootings in the past three months, including a string of attacks at Atlanta-area day spas in mid-March and a rampage days later that killed 10 at a Colorado supermarket. Earlier this month a man fatally shot his girlfriend and five other people before taking his own life at a birthday party in Colorado.

Cassidy's case is not unique, many mass shooters are accused of domestic violence prior to their deadly rampages.
