Mass Shooting on 6th St. in Austin During Biker Rally

The first report of gunfire came in at around 1:24 a.m. near the 400 block of East Sixth Street, an area filled with bars and live music venues.

Austin Interim Police Chief Joseph Chacon said that two patients are now in critical condition during a briefing early Saturday morning, according to KXAN-TV in Austin.

He asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact the police. So far, there has been no official information about the identity of the suspect.

It comes as disturbing footage emerged showing crowds of revellers calmly queuing outside a bar while officers were still giving first aid to the injured.

A 29-year-old woman was killed and another 10 people were injured in a shooting on Chicago's South Side early Saturday.

The Austin shooting was one of several shootings nationwide late Friday and early Saturday.

Chacon also said some officers transported patients to hospitals in their police cruisers due to the nature of the scene, where it was hard to contain the crowd and get ambulances to those who were injured.

Interim Police Chief Joseph Chacon updates reporters on the attack in Austin, Texas, early Saturday.

Eleven of the wounded were taken to one local hospital and the other two were taken to other hospitals, the chief said.

Police have a very general description of the suspect and the incident appears to be isolated to the area, but could not say for certain that there was no additional public danger because the suspect is not in custody, Chacon said.

"They were able to immediately begin life saving measures for many of these patients", he added.

The shooter was not immediately arrested.

"I can not say that there is no further public danger at this point because the suspect is not in custody".

While Chacon addressed what APD defines as a staffing shortage in the department, he said that the usually heavy police presence on E. Sixth was fully staffed last evening.

"It is not clear at this point what sparked this off or why this happened, but out of an abundance of caution we have notified the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, which comes out on active shooter type scenarios", said Chacon.
