Tornado sweeps through suburban Chicago, causing injuries and damage

Officials say a radar-confirmed tornado swept through communities in heavily populated suburban Chicago, damaging more than 100 homes, toppling trees, knocking out power and causing multiple injuries. She said. About 450 power outages were reported. A gas leak and injuries were reported in nearby Naperville, news outlets reported.

The tornado touched down near route 53/75th street in Woodridge, DuPage County, around 11pm ET on Sunday.

The storm destroyed the second floor of the Woodridge family in Bridget Casey. Dozens of other homes were damaged when landing after that time. She sat in a lawn chair in the driveway before sunrise Monday.

At least one tornado touched down and left in its wake a path of destruction through Naperville, Woodridge and Darien, according to the National Weather Service. Her son, Nate Casey, 16, said she was watching TV during the storm and competed to help her mother take her three younger brothers to the basement.


Fox 32 Chicago reported that there was also significant damage in South Haven, Indiana.

The threat for wind damage remained for a few hours as the line of storms moved over northern IL and into northwestern IN, and the severe threat was declared over at 2 a.m. local time.

"The severe threat has diminished/ended for most of the Chicago metro area". The injuries reportedly weren't life-threatening.
