The Colorado Avalanche are open to trading the first overall pick, according to the Denver Post.

“We have to make the best of that first pick. Maybe the best is to trade it. Maybe it’s to keep it. At the end, we’ll see what’s on the table,” new Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said. “Let’s say we back up (in the draft) and we get something really good in return. In the end, you have Jones, MacKinnon and Drouin. You know you will have a premier player.” To Roy’s point, the top three players in this draft are all elite prospects and trading down to the second or third pick isn’t necessarily a big drop.
That being said, an argument could be made that the Avalanche need a potential franchise defenseman like Seth Jones more than they need potential top line forwards like Nathan MacKinnon or Jonathan Drouin.
