Fire Sale Unlikely In Phoenix
The Phoenix Coyotes have pushed themselves into contention, which means they aren’t selling off their veterans players on the trade market yet. And given that they only have six games until the trade deadline, it seems quite unlikely for a fire sale to be a viable option in two weeks.
Yahoo Sports’ Harrison Mooney points out that a good portion of the Coyotes roster is headed for unrestricted free agency most notably Ray Whitney and Shane Doan. So for most non-contenders, this would be a perfect time to sell these assets for prospects and picks. But right now, it’s unclear if the Coyotes can be a Cinderella club in the playoffs, or if they’ll eventually regress to the point that they miss the playoffs.
A Doan trade could return a very handsome return for the Coyotes, but that seems quite unlikely right now. More likely is a Whitney deal perhaps to a club like the Boston Bruins but he’s the Coyotes’ leading scorer now, and they probably won’t part with him unless they are definitely out of the playoff picture in two weeks.
