If the Buffalo Sabres give up on making the playoffs ahead of February 27th trade deadline, Paul Gaustad could become an ultra-hot deadline trade commodity. Andy Strickland of TrueHockey.com reports the towering center should attract plenty of attention as a postseason rental.

“At 30 years-old Gaustad is in the final year of a four year contract that pays him $2.5 million this season. Sources confirm talks between the club and the player have stopped and one can only assume the team is not interested in meeting the number he’s seeking. Whether or not he gets what he wants in the open market remains to be seen but more and more teams are taking a good look at the 6’5 center who’s widely considered one of the better face-off men in the Eastern Conference.”

The San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames may all have some degree of interest in Gaustad.
