NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is reportedly pushing to put an expansion team in Seattle.

If true, the Seattle team could start playing as early as the 2014-15 campaign. The timing would make some sense. The situation with the Phoenix Coyotes has been resolved for the time being, the new CBA has given the NHL owners a bigger share of the revenue pie and therefore put them in a stronger financial position, and the new realignment lends itself to western expansion. As it is, the new Eastern Conference has 16 teams while the Western Conference has 14. Putting two more teams in the Western Conference – say Seattle and another city – would balance the sides.
