The Detroit Red Wings announced Friday they had signed free-agent defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo to a two-year contract and re-signed restricted free-agent forward Justin Abdelkader to a four-year deal. Financial terms were not released for either deal.

Colaiacovo had two goals, 17 assists and a plus-7 rating in 64 regular-season games with the St. Louis Blues last season, and three assists and a plus-2 rating in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games. Financial terms of his deal were not released.

A nine-year veteran, Colaiacovo has 30 goals and 109 assists in 370 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blues. A promising offensive-minded blueliner coming out of junior hockey the Leafs made him the 17th pick of the 2001 Entry Draft Colaiacovo, 29, has struggled to stay healthy during his time in the NHL, playing more than 70 games just once and more than 65 games just three times.

Abdelkader, 25, had eight goals and 14 assists in 81 regular-season games last season, and played in five playoff games. Financial terms of his deal were not released, but MLive.com is reporting the contract will have an annual average value of $1.8 million.

A 2005 second-round pick of the Red Wings, Abdelkader has 18 goals and 29 assists in 209 games spread across five seasons. He also has three goals and two assists in 37 playoff games.
