NHL Signings: Detroit Signs Mikael Samuelsson, Jordin Tootoo, Jonas Gustavsson
- The Detroit Red Wings decided to bring Swedish winger Mikael Samuelsson back with a two-year contract. Samuelsson played four seasons for Detroit (2005-2009), where he had a career breakthrough of sorts. He also has a right-handed shot that could be very useful on a team heavy with lefties. That’s the good news. The bad news is that he doesn’t exactly break the trend of Detroit becoming an older, more fragile team. Samuelsson played in just 54 games last season.
- The Detroit Red Wings continue to add depth players as they signed Jordin Tootoo to a three-year deal worth $5.7 million. The Red Wings certainly had plenty of time to evaluate Tootoo, as he’s been a part of Central Division rival Nashville Predators for eight seasons. He quietly put up a career-high 30 points this season, making him an interesting piece that Detroit rarely gains: a pest who can score a little bit.
- The Wings reached a deal in the first hour of this year’s free agency period when former Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Jonas Gustavsson agreed to a two-year contract on Sunday afternoon. In three seasons with the Leafs, Gustavsson posted a 39-45-15 record with a 2.98 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage.
