The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired defenseman Luke Schenn from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for right wing James van Riemsdyk.

Schenn, 22, is entering his fifth NHL season. He was drafted fifth overall by the Maple Leafs in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and appeared in 310 games, posting 14 goals and 61 assists for 75 points along with 217 PIM. This past season, Schenn recorded two goals and 20 assists for 22 points in 79 games.

Van Riemsdyk, 23, collected 11 goals and 13 assists in 43 games for the Flyers in 2011-12. He shared the Flyers’ team lead with seven goals in 11 playoff games in 2011 after earning career highs in goals (21), points (40) and +/- (+15) in 75 games during the 2010-11 season. He has 47 goals and 52 assists for 99 points in 196 NHL regular season games.

“We are really excited by the parts of the game that James will bring to the Leafs,” said Maple Leafs GM Burke. “He will provide speed, size, and finesse to our top two lines and we know that he fits those needs that we have wanted to address for some time. We thank Luke for his tremendous on and off ice contributions to our organization. He’s a true professional and we wish him the very best in Philadelphia.”
