Playing catch up with some signings, news and rumors from around the NHL.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed Colby Armstrong on waivers with the intention of buying out the final year of his contract, according to multiple reports. If Armstrong, who would be heading into the final season of a three-year, $9 million contract, does clear waivers and is bought out, the deal will cost the Maple Leafs $1 million in cap space for 2012-13 and 2013-14. Armstrong had one goal and three points for the Leafs this past season, but also only played 29 games (and only 50 in 2010-11) because of injuries.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have re-signed Mark Olver to a two-year contract. Olver is set to earn $550,000 on a two-way deal in 2012-2013, and $650,000 on a one-way deal in 2013-2014. Although a concussion sidelined Olver for 35 games this past season, he nonetheless managed to impress the Avalanche front office enough to warrant the deal.
  • Ryan Suter doesn’t plan to have in-person meetings with the teams hoping to lure him. Suter will actually be at his farm when he is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Interested teams can call his agent, Neil Sheehy. On top of that, Suter isn’t expected to make his decision by the end of Sunday. “I don’t expect it, because I think tomorrow will be very busy and he’ll need to carefully consider all the information,” Sheehy said. “But it’s not my decision.”
  • Matt Niskanen has agreed to a two-year/$4.6 million contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Niskanen had four goals and 21 points in 75 games in 2011-12. He would have been a restricted free agent on July 1st.
