  • Detroit Free Press reporter Helene St. James took a look at the reasons why the Detroit Red Wings might have some interest in defenseman Dennis Wideman. St. James points to Wideman’s right-handed shot and offensive acumen as things that the Red Wings could absolutely use. On the other hand, she also points out that his defensive flaws means he’d probably need to be paired with a “stay at home” type.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers announced that James van Riemsdyk won’t opt for surgery on a torn labrum in his right hip. Van Riemsdyk had a disappointing 2011-12 season after signing a significant contract extension last summer. His struggles seemed to stand out that much more because many of his teammates including depth forwards had great years.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News believes there might be “whispers” about Buffalo Sabres center Derek Roy. The Sabres might be wise to keep Roy around being that they already have a deficit at the center position. However, if they decide he’s not a part of their longer term plans, the draft could be a great time to move him. He’s in the final year of his contract.
