• Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun says that the Jarome Iginla trade rumors will continue to grow louder and louder as the trade deadline approaches. He says that it doesn’t appear that the team will make any moves within the next week as they leave Calgary for a crucial road trip. Sportak suggests that the rumors surrounding Iginla, and some of the team’s other talked about trade targets like Miikka Kiprusoff and Jay Bouwmeester, may turn into something more substantial should the Flames lose more than a couple of their upcoming games though.
  • If their current five-game winless skid stretches much further, it could prompt the Toronto Maple Leafs to make a trade in order to avoid another late-season tumble down the standings says Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star. Zwolinski reports that Toronto would like to add a center and a top-four defenseman to their roster. One name he mentions as a potential for the Leafs is veteran center Mike Ribeiro.
  • Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press says the Winnipeg Jets needs to either put Alexander Burmistrov back into the lineup and give him some playing time or consider trading him. Burmistrov has been a healthy scratch for the Jets’ last four games. Lawless says coach Claude Noel has made his point to Burmistrov and the team needs his presence on the penalty kill.
  • USA Today’s Kevin Allen takes a look at 10 pending free agents and weighs in on whether or not they should be re-signed by their current team of used as trade chips. Among the players he thinks shoudl be moved are Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow while Valtteri Filppula and David Clarkson are players he thinks it would be wise to re-sign.
  • According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, the New York Islanders, currently sitting ninth in the East and just two points out of a playoff spot, show no signs of being trade deadline sellers. The team has begun contract talks with captain Mark Streit and will soon begin talks with both Evgeni Nabokov and Lubomir Visnovsky. All three have contracts that expire at the end of the season. Staple also reports that the Islanders would like to re-sign pending free agent forward Brad Boyes.
