Quick Hits: Paul Martin, Jason Garrison, Ryan Wilson, Steve Ott
Catching up on some Quick Hits from around the league:
- The Pittsburgh Penguins are no longer “actively” shopping Paul Martin, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says.Even though there has been some interest, he has it on “rock-solid authority” that the defenseman is not being offered around the league. The Penguins are rumored to be primed to make a run at Zach Parise and/or Ryan Suter come July 1, and despite shedding Milan Michalek’s salary in a trade with the Coyotes, may have no choice but to still part ways with Martin and the $5 million cap hit that remains for another three years.
- Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said he’s “optimistic” about getting a deal done with Jason Garrison. The GM said a contract offer is on the table for the 27-year-old who is set to be an unrestricted free agent July 1. He tallied a career-high 16 goals (nine on the power play) and 33 points this past season, but may still ultimately want to test the market. Garrison made $700,000 in 2011-12 and is certainly do for a hefty raise.
- Ryan Wilson has inked a three-year/$6.75 million contract extension with the Colorado Avalanche. Wilson will make $2 million in 2012-13 and $2.375 million in each of the final two seasons of his contract. He had 21 points, 97 hits, and 70 blocked shots in 59 games last season.
- The Dallas Stars are open to trading Steve Ott, according to Pierre LeBrun. Ott’s name also came up in trade rumors in the lead-up to the 2011-12 trade deadline. LeBrun specified that the Stars are still content to keep him if no one meets their asking price. Ott had 39 points and 156 penalty minutes in 74 games last season.
