Quick Hits: Wayne Gretzky, Detroit Red Wings
Quick Hits from around the league:
- Last week, we mentioned Wayne Gretzky talking to the Toronto Maple Leafs about joining the team. Gretzky is flattered and humbled anytime his name comes up in conversations for executive jobs around the NHL, but he hasn’t had substantive conversations with any franchise about future employment, and he isn’t planning to any time soon. “I consider it an honor that people are even thinking about my name, thinking about me,” Gretzky told NHL.com Monday.

The Detroit Red Wings are looking at a new arena, according to the Detroit News.
The Red Wings have been at the Joe Louis Arena since 1979 and it is out of date, compared to what has been built in the NHL of late. The arena will be downtown and be part of a $650 million entertainment area that will include the hockey palace. Detroit city council are trying to pass legislation that would make owner Mike Ilitch’s company eligible for $13 million per year in tax money from the city of Detroit.
