The San Jose Sharks are unlikely to dip into the free-agent pool this abbreviated 2012-13 campaign.

According to David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson is instead leaning toward promotion from within the organization.

“You don’t want to bring somebody in and then you’re leapfrogging your own guys who are coming back right at that time,” Wilson said. “The next thing you know, you’ve used cap space that you didn’t need to use and you’re jumping over guys that have worked (hard) to get that opportunity.”

If defensemen Brent Burns (groin surgery), Jason Demers (wrist), and Justin Braun (wrist) are still ailing by the season’s start, AHLers Matt Irwin and Matt Tennyson could get a shot at earning a roster spot.
