Daily hockey news from around the league:

The relationship between the Calgary Flames and forward Roman Cervenka has apparently come to an end. According to Igor Eronko of Sports.ru, Cervenka has signed a three-year deal with a Kontinental Hockey League squad. “Cervenka signed 3 year contract with #SKA of #KHL as per club official release ” Cervenka inked a one-year, $3.775-million deal (including performance bonuses) with the Flames ahead of the 2012-13 season. The 27-year-old’s previous KHL experience includes stints with Avangard Omsk and Lev Praha.

One piece of business for the Toronto Maple Leafs this summer could be securing Phil Kessel with a new long-term deal. With just one year left on his current contract (average annual salary: $5.4 million), Kessel merits such an contract extension according to Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail. Particularly after the winger enjoyed so much success this past season. ESPN Insider Craig Custance agrees in addition to acquiring a top center, the Maple Leafs should lock Kessel in with an extension before 2013-14.

Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock is confident that Pavel Datsyuk won’t be going to play in Russia after his contract expires next season.

“You mean how long is his deal and how much is he gonna make? Well, there’s this much possibility he’s going back to Russia,” said Babcock, making a zero with his thumb and index finger. “I mean, we’ll get it done (new deal) in the summer.” He is set to make $6.7 million in 2013-14 and talks for an extension are expected to take place in July. There was speculation that he could play in the KHL after speaking fondly of his experience during the lockout, which set off some alarm bells. “It’s kind of my dream, to (go) back and enjoy (playing in front of) Russian friends,” Datsyuk said back in January. “They (fans) cheered for me. You never know how your career will go.” Hopefully, for Detroit and for hockey fans in North America he gets will stay in the NHL.

The New York Rangers will host a pair of games from Yankee Stadium next season. They will play the New Jersey Devils at 12:30 p.m. ET on January 26, 2014, and will face the New York Islanders at 7:30 p.m. ET on January 29, 2014. “The teams playing in these two games the Rangers, Islanders and Devils have tremendously loyal fans and the rivalries are intense because of their proximity and playoff history,” said Mathieu Schneider, NHLPA special assistant to the Executive Director. “Yankee Stadium is a landmark venue in New York City, and to see hockey played in such a celebrated setting will be extremely memorable to the players and everyone involved.”

Re-signing forward Damien Brunner is believed to be a priority for the Detroit Red Wings this summer. Ansar Khan of MLive.com suggests there’s “no question” the Red Wings will try to extend the unrestricted free agent-to-be, but proposed money and term is more difficult to predict.”Given that he doesn’t have a proven track record in the NHL, they might look to ink him for a shorter term (two years). If I were to guess, I’d say his salary-cap hit would be in the $2.5 million range.”

The Calgary Flames signed goaltender Joey MacDonald to a one-year, $925,000 contract on Saturday.

MacDonald was claimed off waivers from the Detroit Red Wings by the Flames in February.

New Jersey Devils forward prospect Stefan Matteau has been released by his junior team, the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, according to the team on Monday afternoon. The situation is rather strange as Matteau is believed to have quit the team after being benched during Game 2 of the Armada’s playoff series against Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s semifinal.

Following one of the more surprising trade-deadline deals, a fresh start awaits Marian Gaborik with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch proposes Gaborik will play on the Blue Jackets top line alongside center Ryan Johansen and left winger R.J. Umberger starting Thursday against the Nashville Predators. It’s a role GM Jarmo Kekalainen hopes the 31-year-old fills for a good long while.

The Boston Bruins aren’t asking Wade Redden snagged in a deal with the St. Louis Blues to play each and every game. Or even most games. As discussed by Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe, the Bruins hope the veteran defenseman is able to satisfactorily fill in as injury relief, or if one of the kids hits a rough patch.

Even a fire sale can have its limitations. Turns out forward Curtis Glencross and defenseman Mark Giordano weren’t available after all. According to the Calgary Sun, Glencross and Giordano topped a very short list of Calgary Flames ‘untouchables’ ahead of Wednesday’s trade deadline.

“We’ve been looking to acquire a top left-handed defenceman and Jay represents that and is an elite player in our game,” said Blues general manager Doug Armstrong.

The 29-year-old blueliner has scored six goals and nine assists in 33 games with the Flames this season.

The 2013 first-rounder is a conditional draft pick. If the Blues miss the playoffs, the 2013 first round pick becomes a fourth-rounder and the Flames will receive the Blues’ 2014 first-round pick.

Bouwmeester has one year remaining past this season on a five-year deal he signed prior to the 2009-10 season worth an average annual value of $6.68-million.

A veteran of 10 NHL seasons, Bouwmeester holds the NHL record for most games played without a playoff appearance, breaking Guy Charron’s long-standing record earlier this season.

He was acquired by the Flames via trade from the Florida Panthers prior to the 2009 season.

In 750 career NHL games with the Panthers and Flames, Bouwmeester has scored 71 goals and 229 assists. He was originally selected third overall by the Panthers at the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

He has represented Canada internationally on several occasions winning two gold- and one silver medal at the IIHF World Championships, gold at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey along two silver- and one bronze medal at the World Junior Hockey Championships.

The Buffalo News caught up with the Buffalo Sabres after practice on Friday, and Jason Pominville sounded off on the fact that his name has been involved in rumors. ”It doesn’t affect me at all,” a ‘clearly affected’ Pominville told the News. “I just answered the question. It makes no sense to me right now. Again, I have a contract that has a clause in it, and I haven’t been asked anything. I’m not worried about it. I’ve just got to go out there and play. If something happens, then I’ll worry about it. Right now it’s just trying to win games.” Pominville has one-year remaining after this season on his contract and has a limited no-move clause where he can name eight teams he won’t accept a trade to.

Ansar Khan of MLive.com discusses the options the Detroit Red Wings have with imprending unrestricted free agent Valtteri Filppula. The Red Wings and Filppula have had contract talks, but remain far apart and if a deal can’t be reached then the club could lose Filppula for nothing in the summer. Unless, the decide to move him prior to the trade deadline.

The Buffalo News reports that Jordan Leopold stands a very good chance of being dealt before Wednesday’s trading deadline.

Leopold is set to become an unrestricted free agent in July, the Sabres are going to be sellers and he is likely not going to fit into the team’s plans going forward. Sounds like the veteran defenseman will be moving on for a draft pick.
