With the trade market not yet fully revealing who will be buys and sellers, Jonathan Willis of the Edmonton Journal suggets GM Steve Tambellini could look to the free agent market to fill the void.

Willis suggest Jason Arnott, Blair Betts, Dominic Moore, Brendan Morrison, and Jesse Winchester as options, and proposes Daymond Langkow could serve as a decent two-way forward in the short-term.

Willis says “Langkow is similar to Arnott in that he’s probably more suited to a depth offensive than a defensive role. He’s also smaller than Arnott, and not especially good in the faceoff circle. However, he has killed penalties in the past and last year showed he could still play hockey after returning from a serious neck injury that cost him almost all of the 2010-11 season. There’s a good case that he’s a better two-way player than Arnott right now”

“I talked with some teams in early July and came close with one. For some reason it didn’t work out,” said the former Montreal forward. “I wish I’d been signed right away but then again, it’s nothing I can control. Fellow UFAs Brendan Morrison, Jason Arnott and Dominic Moore are still unsigned. I’ve looked at rosters and there are still spots on a few. We’ll see what the future brings.” He missed the final 21 games of last season with a concussion, which he originally thought was an ear infection, but he is healthy now and believes he will find a new NHL home soon.

Tomorrow is the first day of NHL Free Agency. Be sure to follow NHLTR on Facebook and Twitter to stay updated on all the latest Free Agent and Trade news.

Don’t be surprised if the Florida Panthers make a play for Martin Brodeur if he hits the free agent market. Brodeur has yet to re-sign with the New Jersey Devils and there is a very real chance he will test free agency. If that should come to pass, the Panthers might see him as the perfect mentor for starting goalie of the future Jakob Markstrom.

Expect Florida Panthers top prospect Jonathan Huberdeau to break camp with the Panthers this upcoming season. The 19-year-old has nothing left to prove in junior and likely does not need any seasoning in the AHL after registering 72 points in only 37 games in the QMJHL this past season. Huberdeau also led his team, the Saint John Sea Dogs, to the Memorial Cup Semifinals,he has star potential.

Dave Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports the Sharks aren’t expected to sign any of their pending UFAs before July 1. So other clubs will have a shot at forwards Torrey Mitchell, Dominic Moore, Brad Winchester, and Daniel Winnik.

It is expected that the Montreal Canadiens and P.K. Subban will begin contract talks next week. Subban is slated to become a restricted free agent on July 1st but the Habs will likely try and tie him up in a long-term deal so long as Subban’s demands are reasonable.

The Edmonton Oilers are more or less confirmed sellers at this point, but John MacKinnon of the Edmonton Journal writes that the club will be very particular about which players it moves. ”At no time are we going to be selling anything that is going to hurt our future, what we think is part of our core or something that is going to sustain good play for a long time,” Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini said. “If it’s something we feel will make us significantly better, long-term and short-term, of course we’ll consider it. Of the Oilers believed to be on the market, forward Ales Hemsky would net Tambellini the most return, as MacKinnon states that clubs is not interested in dealing Sam Gagner, Nikolai Khabibulin or Ryan Smyth.

The NHL leading Detroit Red Wings remain in search of a bottom six winger and a third pairing defenseman to help them in the post-season reports Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, but the club is dealing from a position of strength.”Right now, I’m exploring,” Holland said. “Let’s see between now and the 27th if there’s a deal at the right price that can give us a little bit of a boost.”

With the Lighting sitting in 13th in the Eastern Conference, it’s looking more and more likely that the club could be a seller at the deadline, according to Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune. Erlendsson lists impending unrestricted free agents Dominic Moore,Pavel Kubina, Brett Clark, Adam Hall and Matt Gilroy could all be players that general manager Steve Yzerman tries to turn into futures should the club decide to sell.

As reported by George Richards of the Miami Herald, the 36-year-old Bryan McCabe has ”unofficially retired”. Harboring little desire to leave his family and home in Florida, McCabe seems to be at peace with his decision.
