Detroit Red Wings Tried To Make Moves At Trade Deadline

Red Wings GM Ken Holland was active leading up to the trade deadline, but wasn’t able to finalize a deal with another team, the Detroit News reports.

Holland made competitive offers for several players in the final week prior to the deadline, but nothing materialized.

“When you look at what transpired, you can figure out who we would have had some interest in,” Holland told the News. “At the end of the day we didn’t get it done and it was for a whole host of reasons.”

It’s believed the Wings were not interested in trading away some of their top young talent in exchange for short-term fixes.

The Wings had pursued Jay Bouwmeester, but were not willing to trade Calgary a first-round draft pick. As a result, the Flames dealt Bouwmeester to the St. Louis Blues.

Future Hall of Fame right wing Jaromir Jagr was also a target of Holland’s, but the Dallas Stars ended up shipping him to the Boston Bruins.

“We don’t need depth players,” Holland said. “From a depth standpoint, we have players on our team. We’re going to go with the kids.”

The Red Wings have been decimated by injuries this season, but are expected to get forwards Todd Bertuzzi, Mikael Samuelsson and Darren Helm, and defenseman Kyle Quincey back in the next couple weeks.

Meanwhile, Wings forward Valtteri Filppula is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent July 5, but he’s expressed an interest in staying with the team.

“It’s been a great place to be, a great team obviously,” he told the News. “You want to be on that kind of team.”

Filppula and the Wings are expected to continue contract negotiations, though it’s unclear when talks will get serious. It’s possible the two sides will push talks off until Detroit’s season is over.

After dealing for forward Jaromir Jagr, the Boston Bruins are looking to acquire help on defense before today’s trade deadline. Specifically a left-shot defenseman, according to Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe.

With Mark Streit reportedly unavailable, veteran Ryan Whitney could fit the bill. Depending on what the Edmonton Oilers want in return, Whitney could be a good fit with his hometown squad. Otherwise, GM Peter Chiarelli supposedly content with his current corps of blue-liners might add a less-expensive depth defenseman.

The Detroit Red Wings aren’t looking to add depth players as the NHL trade deadline approaches, and the players they were most interested in already have been dealt to other teams. That list includes defenseman Jay Bouwmeester and forwards Jaromir Jagr and Jarome Iginla.
Bob McKenzie tweeted that after the Vancouver Canucks acquired Derek Roy, they let the Leafs know that the parameters on a Luongo deal have changed. They no longer require a center in a deal. The Canucks still think they need to get something tangible back for Luongo to help them into the playoffs. That may still be an issue for the Maple Leafs.

The Dallas Stars have dealt Jaromir Jagr to the Boston Bruins in exchange for a draft pick and two prospects, but the transaction is still pending a trade call with the league, a source told ESPN.com Tuesday.

The Stars had been talking to Jagr’s camp for three weeks about a possible extension but over the past few days had second thoughts with the team fading in the standings.

Boston Bruins forward David Krejci said he was trying not to think about the possibilities for Boston as the team heads into a matchup against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night at TD Garden.

“He was the best for a long time, and he’s still one of the best right now,” said Krejci, who was just 4 years old when Jagr made his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1990. “It’s good to see him still do well at his age. I had posters of him when I was a kid. He was obviously my hockey idol.”

It appears talks in regards to a contract extension have hit a wall. As indicated by ESPNBoston.com’s James Murphy the Dallas Stars are reportedly willing to deal Jaromir Jagr in the next 28 hours (or so). “Told by an NHL source that Jaromir Jagr is now on trade market. Would be good acquisition for the Boston Bruins.” The Philadelphia Flyers are also thought to be seriously interested in trading for Jagr.
The New York Rangers are interested in acquiring an experienced defenseman and/or “gritty” winger ahead of Wednesday’s trade deadline. Larry Brooks of The New York Post suggests GM Glen Sather could move one of his big centers in exchange for such a player. ”According to sources, there is considerable interest in Brian Boyle, who logged 17:40 last night in what sure looked like a showcase. Despite a miserable season, the 6-foot-7 center has the size coveted by Cup contenders.”
If presented with the right offer, the Ottawa Senators could move Ben Bishop before Wednesday’s deadline. ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun reports the Senators have received “several calls” regarding the netminder in recent days/hours.

For Peter Chiarelli, the color choice was right, but Jarome Iginla wound up wearing the wrong shades of black and gold and the Boston Bruins GM now must move on. The Boston Bruins will be all over Martin St. Louis if the Tampa Bay Lightning make him available for a trade. He would be the best possible option at this point. There’s also Jaromir Jagr or if Ryane Clowe can be packaged with All-Star defenseman Dan Boyle, then perhaps the Bruins can kill two birds with one stone in a deal with the San Jose Sharks. Or perhaps the Bruins will deal with the Edmonton Oilers, where both Ryan Whitney and Ales Hemsky could be sent to Boston to fill a couple of needs. Maybe Chiarelli can convince his good buddy Jay Feaster to give him a discount for Calgary’s Jay Bouwmeester.
With the San Jose Sharks in the middle of the playoff run there have been all kinds of rumors swirling with the trade deadline looming less than a week away. With Douglas Murray having already been dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins it seems the right move has been made so far. But, with plenty of times left and lots of rumors to sort through general manager Doug Wilson may not be done yet. While it’s definitely odd to see the Sharks being more of a seller at the deadline than as a buyer like in the last few years, it does seem a little nice for a change.

Jarome Iginla isn’t the only big time veteran on the Boston Bruins radar as they try to line up behind the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference acquisition race. Penguins GM Ray Shero is clearly making a statement that the time is now for Sidney Crosby and Co.

That leaves the Bruins and general manager Peter Chiarelli as a team looking for an answer prior to the April 3 NHL trade deadline. A source with knowledge of trade discussions has indicated to CSNNE.com that the Bruins are in on several other available top six forwards just in case the Iginla talks fall apart. Jaromir Jagr and Martin St. Louis are a pair of game-changing players that could fit the bill as offensive play makers and power-play boosters.

After dealing captain Brenden Morrow, the Dallas Stars could soon be hanging the “For Sale” sign according to the New York Post’s Larry Brooks. While rental players such as Jaromir Jagr, Derek Roy and Eric Nystrom could likely be had, Brooks wonders if the Stars might truly start a rebuild by fielding offers on forward Loui Eriksson. The 27-year-old Swede has proven he can produce – netting 25-plus in each of his last four seasons – and would net a tidy return by virtue of the three years remaining on his contract beyond 2013 at an affordable $4.25 million.
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter Dehan Kovacevic thinks the Pittsburgh Penguins still have some cards to play after landing Stars’ captain Brenden Morrow via trade Sunday. He thinks the Penguins next priority will be adding a depth defenseman. While the possibility of adding a top-four name may be pricey for the Pens, he writes, the availability of a top-six body such as Phoenix Coyotes Rostislav Klesla might be available to the Penguins without mortgaging too many future assets.
Center Mike Ribeiro has apparently been impressed enough over his first season in Washington that he’d be open to re-signing with the club. However, as the Washington Times’ Stephen Whyno reports, the pending UFA will be looking for hefty term on his next contract: probably in the five-year range. Ribeiro’s exceptional play making abilities may make him an attractive deadline target if he is unable to reach a deal with the Washington Capitals.
With NCAA free agent Andrej Sustr signing with Tampa Bay Lighting last week, the top available collegiate free agent is now Western Michigan defender Danny DeKeyser. TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reported via Twitter that DeKeyser might also be close to making a decision on his NHL future. NHL execs are expected to make pitches to DeKeyser’s camp in person in Toronto mid-week with the defender expected to have his equipment ready to immediately join whichever organization he chooses to sign with.

Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch says the shortened NHL season will mean plenty of confuison at the trade deadline. ”It’s all out of whack this year,” Portzline quoted an NHL executive as saying. Portzline goes on to say that the Columbus Blue Jackets won’t divulge what they plan to do at the deadline partly because they simply don’t know where there team will be a week from now. ”We’ve got a big week ahead of us as an organization, and I think a lot of teams are saying the same thing,” said Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Davidson.
The StarTribune’s Michael Russo says that NHL GMs will face some tough choices as trade deadline approaches. With the standings as tight as they are, teams will be reluctant to trade players who could help them reach the playoffs even if it might be the right move to make. He points to the Dallas Stars as an example of a team with a tough decision on whether to pull the plug, buy, sell or stand pat. Some other he says could be players before the deadline include Calgary Flames, San Jose Sharks and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Larry Brooks of the New York Post speculates on whether the Dallas Stars will embrace a rebuild before the trade deadline. He wonders, not whether players like Jaromir Jagr will be made available, but whether the Stars will really look to overhaul their roster by making Loui Eriksson available. If the Stars do, Brooks says the New York Rangers would be very interested in making a deal.
Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News says he thinks the Pittsburgh Penguins will shift their focus and try to acquire the Stars Brenden Morrow and have him play on a line with Evgeni Malkin. He says the Penguins are also interested in defensive help and that Buffalo Sabres defenseman Jordan Leopold could be a target.

Dan Rosen of NHL.com spoke to a few NHL general managers with the deadline looming. Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier stated that he would listen to calls on every player on the club’s roster. ”I don’t think it’s a case of making players available or not available; it’s that you’re trying to improve the club and the focus goes beyond this season,” Regier told Rosen. “It’s that simple, so you have to be open to anything that’s going to do that.” Three members of the team’s core, forwards Jason Pominville, Thomas Vanek and goaltender Ryan Miller all have one year remaining on their deals after this season, and could garner a great deal of interest. In the same article, Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren stated that despite the fact the Flyers were not having the season they expected, he was not looking to add for a playoff run, but would be open to making a hockey deal. ”We’re fairly far back right now,” Holmgren said. “If there is something there that will help us now and in the future I’d probably do that, but I’m not looking for anything.”
John Boruk of CSNPhilly.com believes that the Philadelphia Flyers should explore the trade market for 27-year-old defenseman Andrej Meszaros, who has one-year left on his contract after this season for $4 million. Boruk goes on to state that there are a lot of teams that could use defensive help, like the Ottawa Senators, and Flyers rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers.
According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com, the Dallas Stars have some tough decisions to make the deadline looming. The club is sitting one point out of eighth place in a very crowded Western Conference playoff race, but they have three pending unrestricted free agents in Jaromir Jagr, Brenden Morrow and Derek Roy that would command a great deal of interest in the trade market. LeBrun states that he believes that Morrow won’t return to the Stars next season, and feels that club might be able to get a first or second rounder and a prospect for Roy, who might be priced out of what the Stars can afford in light of the Ryan Getzlaf contract.
