Don’t rule out the Toronto Maple Leafs from pursuing a goalie before next week’s trade deadline. It’s no secret the Leafs want to bring in a veteran presence in support of James Reimer. As one option, TSN’s Darren Dreger suggests the Maple Leafs will at least ask about the availabilty of Miikka Kiprusoff of the Calgary Flames.

On of this season’s more sought-after trade targets may not be available after all. As discussed by Katie Carrera of the Washington Post if Mike Ribeiro and the Washington Capitals can agree to how long they want to extend their relationship. The soon-to-be UFA is looking to sign a four- or five-year contract extension.

Teams looking to trade for goaltending, but unwilling to offer up too much in return, may give the Edmonton Oilers a shout. Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos and Doug MacLean suggest there’s a market for Nikolai Khabibulin amongst squads put off by the cost/commitment attached to the likes of Roberto Luongo, Jonathan Bernier, Ben Bishop, and Miikka Kiprusoff. ”The big guy, obviously, that stands out is Khabibulin,” Kypreos said, in examining the Oilers’ trade prospects. “You don’t want to miss the playoffs and have Khabibulin at the end of the year.”

The Globe and Mail’s Eric Duhatschek discusses the Jarome Iginla to the Los Angeles Kings rumours and says he does not think Iginla would be a good fit in L.A. given the makeup of their roster. He also says the Kings are unlikely to part with backup Jonathan Bernier given Jonathan Quick‘s up and down season. Duhatschek also talks Corey Perry, saying Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings could be in the mix should he hit the free agent market.

Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times speculates as to whether Martin St. Louis would want to leave the Tampa Bay Lightning or whether Steve Yzerman would consider dealing him. No conversations are thought to have taken place about any such move as of yet and St. Louis has a no-move clause in his contract. Cristodero also says moving a player like St. Louis, who has meant so much to the franchise, would be very difficult from a PR perspective. “For Yzerman, dealing St. Louis, who has been with the Lightning since July 2000, would be wrenching,” says Cristodero.

Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune says that Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman is keeping an eye on the trade market and while he is unlikely to make any major moves, he is open to offers. “Probably just be depth-type moves,” Bowman said. “We have had a nice, consistent group on defense and up front, we have some different looks. Perhaps some centermen maybe as a depth thing in case you run into injuries. There’s really not one area that’s a glaring area (n need of improvement.” Kuc says Bowman has, “had tons of conversations,” but no deals are imminent.

Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette lists some potential UFAs that could be moved before the trade deadline as playoff rentals. Among the players he lists are Calgary’s Jarome Iginla and Anton Babchuk, Edmonton’s Ryan Whitney and Ladislav Smid as well as Colorado’s Milan Hejduk. Molinari also points out that the Pittsburgh Penguins have a history of acquiring such players, like Gary Roberts, Bill Guerin and Alex Kovalev for the stretch run.

On Insider Trading on the NHL on TSN, Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Pierre Lebrun discussed Jarome Iginla‘s future. Both McKenzie and Lebrun feel that Iginla could very well be moved at the deadline. ”I think if he’s made available, keep an eye on the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings; Daryl Sutter obviously has that relationship with Iginla from his Calgary days,” LeBrun said. “I think Jonathan Bernier is someone the Kings would be willing to dangle in a trade for Iginla.”

In the same Insider Trading, McKenzie states that the Vancouver Canucks, who are in the market for a center, could be looking towards Dallas Stars, and Derek Roy.

“Roy’s situation is interesting: he makes $4 million a year on the final year of a contract that will see him become an unrestricted free agent this summer,” McKenzie said. “He and the Dallas Stars are not down the road at all on a new contract, and in fact, it would be fair to suggest that they have a much different idea in terms of value.”

Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun suggests that it makes sense for the Senators to pursue Anaheim Ducks forward Corey Perry during the off-season.

Senators GM Bryan Murray originally drafted Perry when he was with Ducks in the first round of the 2003 NHL Draft.

“It makes no sense for the Senators to even inquire about trading for Perry now. He’s not going anywhere at the moment, and even if he was, the package they’d have to give up would be too great, but come July, they should make a pitch that Perry can’t refuse if they want to have a real shot at winning the Cup anytime soon.”

Los Angeles Kings backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier had his day with the Stanley Cup on Thursday in his hometown of Laval, Que., and he took that opportunity to make it clear he doesn’t want to be a backup goaltender for much longer.

Bernier told TVA Sports he expects the Kings to trade him to a team in need of a starting goaltender close to the start of training camp for the 2012-13 season.

“I asked the Kings to trade me before the trade deadline, but they refused,” Bernier said. “Now that Jonathan Quick signed a long-term deal, I expect to be traded before training camp starts.”

Quick, the reigning winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, signed a 10-year, $58 million contract extension that could keep the 26-year-old in a Kings uniform until 2023. Bernier, 23, is entering the final season of a two-year contract and will be a restricted free agent on July 1, 2013.

Bernier also expressed a desire to play “closer to home,” TVA Sports reported.

Bernier played 16 games with the Kings last season, posting a 5-6-2 record with a 2.36 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. It was his second full season in Los Angeles and his games played dipped from 25 in 2010-11, when he had an 11-8-3 record with a 2.48 GAA and .913 save percentage.

Bernier’s final season with the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs in 2009-10 was dominant, with a 30-21-6 record, nine shutouts, a 2.03 GAA and .936 save percentage in 58 games. His workload in that season alone was 10 greater than the 48 career NHL games Bernier has appeared in.

So the Kings may be able to squeeze a bit more out of this deal.

Jack Johnson scored his second goal of the game 1:47 into overtime to give the United States a 5-4 victory over Canada on Saturday in the hockey world championships. Other quick hits from around the league:

Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch wonders if Guy Boucher, Alain Vigneault, Joel Quenneville and Todd McLellan will return to their respective teams next season. If Boucher or Vigneault become available, Garrioch thinks they’ll be atop Montreal’s list.

The Edmonton Oilers have the No. 1 pick and most people believe they will either select Nail Yakupov or trade the pick. However, the Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson writes that Oilers president Kevin Lowe really likes defenseman Ryan Murray, who is impressing him at the World Championships though Lowe tells Matheson the No. 1 pick is up to his scouts.

Cristobal Huet has been stuck in the Swiss League because of his bloated contract, but his $5.625 million annual cap hit comes off the books this summer. The Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson reports that Huet is “dying to get back to the NHL.” He’s played well enough overseas to do so and he’s apparently more than willing to be a No. 2 goalie at $750,000 a season, which is quite an affordable number. So Matheson writes, “The Kings, who say they want a veteran backup if they’re moving Jonathan Bernier this summer, might do well to consider Huet.”

The Detroit Red Wings might be ready to have a spending spree this offseason with about $20 million in cap space. And the Vancouver Province’s Tony Gallagher writes, “Players like Ryan Suter and Zach Parise are apt to be stoked about joining a team that already has the likes of Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and quite likely a returning Nicklas Lidstrom, and also boasts a long tradition of winning despite this year’s early exit from the playoffs.”

If and when Cory Schneider becomes available this off season, there will be a list of teams waiting to take him off the Vancouver Canucks hands. It is expected that Vancouver will try to move the young, talented netminder before or at the NHL Entry Draft. Keeping Schneider makes little sense with Roberto Luongo locked in until 2022.

Who would be most interested in trading for Schneider, and what would Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis want in return? ESPN Insiders breakdown the teams interested and what they think it would take to get Schneider.

Toronto Maple Leafs: This deal would make sense on several fronts. General Manager Brian Burke has expressed, on record and justifiably, a lack of satisfaction with this season’s starting goalies Jonas Gustavsson and James Reimer. A pending unrestricted free agent, Gustavsson is as good as gone in Toronto, and the faith in Reimer has become tenuous. Ideally, Burke could acquire a proven talent like Schneider and let Reimer fight Ben Scrivens for the backup job.

In return, Schneider could cost the Leafs a first-round pick and prospect like forward Nazem Kadri or defenseman Korbinian Holzer. Defensemen Luke Schenn and Cody Franson could also be a part of the conversation.

Tampa Bay Lightning: The Lightning may be even more desperate for reliable goaltending than the Leafs. With only Mathieu Garon and prospect Dustin Tokarski signed through next season as far as NHL-ready goalies are concerned General Manager Steve Yzerman’s top off-season priority is to acquire a reliable No. 1 Schneider or Jonathan Bernier of the Los Angeles Kings could fit the bill nicely. Yzerman should have early-round draft picks to spare (two first-round, four second-round) after making several pre-deadline deals this winter. Young Lightning forward Brett Connolly could also be part of a package deal.

Columbus Blue Jackets: Scott Howson has little choice but to add a decent netminder this summer after this season’s debacle between the pipes. However, there’s some question as to whether the Blue Jackets General Manager would be willing to move his No. 1 or 2 2012 draft pick (guaranteed) in addition to elite winger Rick Nash who most believe is out the door. If the Jackets deal Nash, they may want to keep a grip on that top pick and pursue a goalie through free agency instead. Josh Harding of the Minnesota Wild, perhaps.

New Jersey Devils: Sure, the Devils would love to have a goaltender like Schneider in place to take over, once Martin Brodeur decides to call it a career. Problem is, the Canucks may covet defenseman Adam Larsson in return. And General Manager Lou Lamoriello probably wouldn’t be too keen on relinquishing the future star defenseman.

Canucks: It’s not out of the question that the Canucks could choose to re-sign Schneider long-term and deal Luongo instead. Finding a trade partner willing to take on the 33-year-old’s monster contract would be the challenge, obviously.

The New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings could also be in the mix for the 26-year-old Cancuks’ netminder. Perennial gluttons for top-tier talent, the Red Wings may not be entirely satisfied moving forward through the next two/three seasons with Jimmy Howard alone. Plus, the Wings are still expected to move eastward once the league and NHLPA hash out their differences over realignment. That would reduce the Canucks’ discomfort in regards to making a deal with a top-notch rival in the West.

T Flames will continue to tweak their roster to see if they can get over some proverbial hump, and the biggest question now is whether they’ll think about trading Jarome Iginla or Miikka Kiprusoff. Both players have to waive their no-trade clauses, LeBrun thinks it’s about time Flames General Manager Jay Feaster talks to these veterans about their future in Calgary.

If Kiprusoff goes on the market, it’ll be interesting to see which of the goalie-lacking teams will come sniffing. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning may be the most desperate for a netminder, but both clubs might explore younger, more long-term options first guys like Cory Schneider and Jonathan Bernier.
