The Phoenix Coyotes ownership situation remains “a work in progress” after prospective buyer Greg Jamison was unable to close his transaction to purchase the Coyotes before the time window he had negotiated with the City of Glendale expired last month.

“We’re in a period where there is a series of potentially interested investors who are doing their due diligence on a very expedited basis. Some discussions have been had with the new city council, with the mayor. We hope we can bring this all together fairly quickly, but I’m not making any predictions in that regard.” said Bill Daly. Below are some Quick Hits and NHL Trade Rumors from around the league on this Sunday:

The National Post speculates that as the trade deadline draws nearer, The Toronto Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis could be both a buyer and seller at the deadline.

The Calgary Sun reports that Jarome Iginla and the Flames still haven’t talked about a contract extension. If Iginla doesn’t sign an extension in Calgary, it could mean his time with the Flames would be over at or before the trade deadline.

The Ottawa Sun reports, Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon will listen to all offers because he feels his team is out of the playoff picture. The top name being dangled is reportedly Kris Versteeg.

Although Alex Kovalev‘s future is still up in the air, his time with the Florida Panthers is over. According to a report in the Miami Herald, the Panthers would accommodate Kovalev if he found a team interested in his services.

According to a report in the Ottawa Sun, Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray is waiting to get timelines on his injured players – such as forward Jason Spezza before deciding whether to make any moves at the trade deadline. The report says Murray isn’t yet sure whether the team will be a buyer or a seller.

The finishing line appears to be in sight. And those NHL players interested in participating in the 2014 Olympics should be pleased. Sportsnet’s John Shannon says ”Been told while no meeting of IOC,IIHF,NHL,NHLPA has been set, the next time group gets together should cement NHLers at the Olympics.”

The Florida Panthers avoided salary arbitration with forward Kris Versteeg when the restricted free agent agreed to a four-year contract on Monday. No financial terms were disclosed, but TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that the contract will have an average annual value of $4.4 million per season.

Versteeg, 26, had career bests in goals (23) and points (54) while playing in 71 games for the Panthers last season. He set a Florida franchise record with 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists) in his first 20 games played with the Panthers and recorded his first career hat trick on November 10 at Winnipeg. Versteeg played in all seven of Florida’s postseason contests, scoring three goals and adding two assists.

“Kris played an important role in our club’s success last season and we are pleased to have reached a long-term contract agreement with him,” executive vice president and general manager Dale Tallon said in a statement. “He is a skilled player who recorded career highs in goals and points last season while playing on our top line alongside Stephen Weiss and Tomas Fleischman. We look forward to his continued offensive production, as well as his off-ice contributions in the South Florida community.”

Versteeg has scored 88 goals and 113 assists for 201 points in 321 career games with Chicago (2007-10), Toronto (2010-11), Philadelphia (2010-11) and Florida (2011-12). In 57 postseason games, he has 14 goals and 37 points, and was a member of the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup-winning team in 2010.

Versteeg was acquired from Philadelphia in exchange for a conditional second-round draft pick and a third-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft.

Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports there maybe a trade brewing between the Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs, Don Luce was present for the third time in as many weeks at the ACC for Tuesday’s contest between the Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres. Luce is the Flyers director of player development, spent a similar amount of time in Toronto ahead of last year’s pre-deadline trade for forward Kris Versteeg.

Seravalli suggests Philadelphia could be interested in Luke Schenn.

“I like Schenn because his role with the Flyers would be three-fold. He would be the perfect No. 4 or No. 5 in an already stable defense corps for the Flyers’ playoff run. He would quickly jell on a roster that already features his brother. And he is a capable replacement for Matt Carle, should the Flyers not be able to re-sign the soon-to-be unrestricted free agent.”
