NHL Trade Rumors: Alexander Edler Could Be Trade Bait For Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Province’s Jason Botchford thinks that the Vancouver Canucks best bet for a “reboot” is trading Alexander Edler.

This is not going to be easy because Edler in January signed a five-year, $30 million deal, and he took less to stay with the team in order to help it bring other players in. But Botchford says Vancouver’s defense is a strength, and it has a number of young players ready to play bigger roles. Edler could be a nice chip to acquire some forward help to get the team bigger up front. Edler’s no-trade clause doesn’t start until July, so the Canucks have time to gauge the market, which Botchford thinks would include the Philadelphia Flyers and Anaheim Ducks.

The Vancouver Canucks are likely facing an offseason of on-ice personnel changes. Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province suggests defenseman Alexander Edler could be one of several Vancouver players on the trade block.

“Trading Alex Edler to a team like Philadelphia, for instance, a squad desperate for help on the back end to help them get back into the mix in the East. They have some outstanding frontline offensive talent they might be persuaded to part with for a player like Edler — who, upon hearing a different coach’s voice giving different directions, might develop into that great defenceman he looked like he could become in the Stanley Cup playoffs two years ago.”

Signed through until 2019, Edler earns an average-annual salary of $5 million. The 27-year-old Swede was a disappointment this regular season, notching only 22 points in 45 games.

NHL Trade Rumors: Edmonton Oilers Could Draft First Round Draft Pick

A high draft pick could be available via trade this June, according to one of the NHL’s top insiders. As suggested by TSN’s Bob McKenzieand as relayed by the Edmonton Journal the Edmonton Oilers might be willing to move their top 2013 overall selection.

“If you’re going to be bold, that’s certainly a bold move,” McKenzie said during Wednesday night’s broadcast. “What the Edmonton Oilers really don’t need is another 18-year-old blue chipper. They need some help right now and using that first round pick as currency could get them that help right now of they may use the pick, but they may try and parlay it into something immediate.”

TSN’s Darren Dreger suggested new Oilers GM Craig MacTavish could be looking to make several changes.

“He wants to upgrade in all areas, starting in goal,” Dreger said.

Adding some size, strength, and grit to the blue line is also thought to be a high priority for the Edmonton club. As it stands, the Oilers are in position to select no lower than 7th overall.

The 2013 NHL trade deadline is barely in the books and we’re already looking ahead to summer transactions. Specifically, would the Nashville Predators be interested in trading defenseman Shea Weber in exchange for additional scoring? In speaking with CBC.ca’s Elliotte Friedman, Predators GM David Poile suggested that’s not likely to happen.

“I talked to general manager David Poile about Nashville’s need to build offence. The Predators have the lowest “one-goal game” winning percentage in the NHL and are the victim of eight shutouts, also 30th. I asked Poile if he’d consider trading Shea Weber once the post-offer sheet moratorium ends in July: “We have a franchise goaltender and the best defenceman in the NHL. We are building our team around them.”

The New Jersey Devils could have a new top-six forward before the afternoon is through. Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos suggests Devils GM Lou Lamoriello may make a significant move in the next couple of hours.

“Keep an eye on #Devils Uncle Lou. Apparently he got his 1st round pick to dangle and he wants a scoring winger …”

According to Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen, that’s the latest impression given by the Ottawa Senators assistant general manager. ”After talking with Tim Murray, I’m thinking Ben Bishop gets traded. Senators in (position) to keep driving up the price.” And Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun suggests the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, Phoenix Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Carolina Hurricanes are all in the mix for Bishop.

Miikka Kiprusoff is expected to remain with the Calgary Flames through the trade deadline and at the end of the year retire.

This should effect the Roberto Luongo and Ben Bishop markets.

CBC’s Elliotte Friedman reports the Phoenix Coyotes are asking for a prized package in return for defenseman Keith Yandle.

“Yandle price is steep. Two impact forwards, including someone who can be No.1 centre. Not getting traded unless offer PHO can’t refuse.”

It’s believed Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris is more likely to be dealt today. Teams are also reportedly calling about the availability of Rostislav Klesla.

After dealing for forward Jaromir Jagr, the Boston Bruins are looking to acquire help on defense before today’s trade deadline. Specifically a left-shot defenseman, according to Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe.

With Mark Streit reportedly unavailable, veteran Ryan Whitney could fit the bill. Depending on what the Edmonton Oilers want in return, Whitney could be a good fit with his hometown squad. Otherwise, GM Peter Chiarelli supposedly content with his current corps of blue-liners might add a less-expensive depth defenseman.
