Tom Renney’s Fate As Edmonton Oilers Coach Uncertain
Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal chatted with Edmonton Oilers General Manager Steve Tambellini and he indicated there’s no rush in deciding whether to offer Tom Renney a new contract as head coach, or go in a different direction.
“We’ll get it done,” Tambellini said. “I’m going to our meetings, then to the worlds. Sometime in there, hopefully.”
The IIHF Men’s Championship takes place May 4-20. Word has it Brent Sutter will be auditioning for the Oilers’ gig, as head coach of Team Canada under Edmonton’s President of Hockey Operations, Kevin Lowe. Sutter got the job one day after being fired as head coach of the Calgary Flames.
Furthermore, Tambellini has yet to sit down and seriously discuss the future of the team with his current coach. Renney may have a shot at another season behind the Oilers’ bench, but it doesn’t appear as though he’s the organization’s top choice.
