Why NHL Players Oppose Even Revenue Split In Collective Bargaining Agreement
SI.com’s Stu Hackel attempts to break down the reasons why the NHLPA isn’t interested in a 50-50 revenue split a model that on the surface, at least would seem to resemble the agreements made last year by players in the NFL and NBA.
“The economic systems are different in the various sports, union boss Donald Fehr told Hackel and other reporters in a recent conference call. For example, the football number is not based on the same revenue definitions [as the NHL] even remotely.
And what happens when you define revenue the same way across all three leagues? Then the split between the owners and players,” Hackel reports, “is roughly 50-50 right now.”
